    Would you care to drink a blended tawny wine?

    For it lies between yellow and red.

    And it has a fragrance: when inhaled,

    it brings rapture while still in its cask, before it spreads.

    And when you behold it in its cup,

    reason departs, and no concealment remains.

    قد صفا الكلُ صفاء إِذا تدار

    You cannot distinguish the cup from its wine;

    all is perfectly clear when it is passed around.

    حُسنها يُغنيِ طَروبَا عن خمار

    It intoxicated most of us before our lips touched it;

    its beauty frees a merry soul from need of a vintner.

    Many a moth has fallen into its wine,

    never thinking that the wine was fire.

    Its entrails were burned; then it went about

    revealing secrets, its bridle cast off.

    Few stand firm when it is brought,

    or are seen drinking with patient self-restraint.
