This is the one, O my people, who has bewitched me.

I wonder what he has resolved to do.

His might has prevailed over me.

And thus whoever loves is humbled.

He has bewitched me with his beauty,

And slain me with his cruel treatment.

And withheld his union from me,

And shown himself aloof and proud.

Eyes have never seen his like,

And all hearts are lost in love for him.

For love of him I cast off my bridle,

And I let the decree descend.

    Let him forsake my bridle,

And I let the decree descend.

Let him forsake me or unite with me:

The beautiful one knows what he is doing.

    جَلَّ أنْ يَحْوِيه فِكْرِي

    This is the one whose beauty has taken me captive;

He is too exalted for my thought to encompass him.

For love of him I cast off my reins,

And wander in love for him all my days.

Then I forsake all that passes away,

Until it no longer crosses my mind.

And become oblivious to my own will,

Until I am found in no gathering.

And whoever relies on an ignorant man

Is not, by my life, ignorant of his worth.

By God, listen to my words,

And may you give ear to what I say.

    Then desist from blaming me,

And beware of being veiled by my shadow.

The beautiful one has become my imam,

    And I pray behind him.

How could I not make him my imam,

If good fortune draws near again?

And if a trick should be played on me,

There is nothing I can do in this state.
