O Sa'd, say to the priest within the monastery:

Is that a lamp, or the cup filled with wine?

We journeyed by night toward it, thinking it a fire kindled

On a hill, until dawn's bright brow appeared.

I say to my companions: the fire has returned; it has moved.

It gleams and fades—this is not how such a fire moves.

Were it a star, it would not stand still.

I was bewildered by this, as I was bewildered by my own condition.

Until I reached the monastery and found above it

A glass vessel; I do not know what is in it—I do not know.

By Christ, tell us truly: what did it hold?

He said to us, 'The wine of love—so keep my secret.'

It had already been offered before Seth to a night visitor

Who came heading for the monastery, traveling beneath the dark.

We said to him, 'For one who seeks intoxication, at what price

Do you sell it to him?' He said to us, 'He buys it,

But its due price is the surrender of self and wealth,

With humility before the wine-seller, and praise and thanks.'

    فَمَنْ لام أو يَلْحَى ففي جَانب الصَبرِ

    We said to him, 'Take it, and give us to drink;

Whoever blames or reproaches, we shall stand on patience's side.'

He kept giving us drink with gracious gentleness,

And paired the draughts, until he brought the even and the odd.

When we became jewels and our souls grew sweet,

And feared the brawler in our drunken state,

The wine-seller noticed us and said to us, 'Drink,

And be glad: there is no one in the monastery but me.

Depart if you wish, and direct others

To us; conceal the matter from anyone lacking understanding.'

Al-Shushtari's breast has grown tight from keeping it secret,

With sobriety after effacement, and spaciousness in the breast.

So let me trail my hem in pride before all creation,

And yearn for one like the jurist Abu Bakr.

And floats in the sea of existence and its flood,

With a gentle wind stirred by thought's horizon.

And that, to us, comes through special election and attraction.

Whoever strays cannot catch up, even if he strives hard on the journey.

Under hardship: the benefit lies in that patience.

And tearing it apart is breaking habits through curtailment.

A station, yet one tied to creation and command.

From the intellect, which is acquired throughout time.

In your breaking the talisman through humility lies a tincture,

And that is an elixir called 'breaking.'

And hardship's riddle is deciphered and unraveled through ease.

Of the lower world—and they are stripped away as if by magic.

In the higher world is our delight, which

We circle around now; life is in the circling.

Which you sensed woven into the midst of the verse—

Says 'I'; illusion is what draws one toward otherness.

Whoever sees no other—how can he be in need?

And he has become worthy of surrender, verse, and prose.
