سُلُوِّيَmy forgetting مكروهٌdisapproved وحُبكَand loving you واجبٌobligatory
وشوقِيand my longing مقيمٌabiding والتَّواصلُand communion غائبُabsent
My forgetting you is disapproved; loving you is obligatory.
My aversion is abhorrent, your love obligatory,
And my longing abides, while communion is absent.
My yearning settled, communication absent.
وفيand on لوحthe tablet قلبيmy heart منof وِدَادكِlove for you أسطرٌlines
وَدمعيand my tears مِدادٌink مثلlike ماlinking particle الحسنbeauty كاتبُa scribe
And on the tablet of my heart are lines of love for you.
In my heart's page your affection I inscribe,
And my tears are ink, just as beauty is a scribe.
My tears, ink; and beauty, calligrapher.

And my mind's reader, reciting lovely qualities,
My thoughts peruse the charms unceasingly
Perseveres in studying the verses of beauty.
To master lessons of beauty diligently.
أُنَزِّهُI let roam طَرفيmy gaze فيin سماءthe sky جَمالكمْyour beauty
لِثاقبto the acuity of ذِهنيmy mind نَجمُهاits star هوit ثاقبُpiercingly bright
I let my gaze roam through the sky of your beauty.
I purify my gaze in your beauty's sky,
To my keen mind, its star is piercingly bright.
For my piercing mind, its star piercing equally.
حَديثُtalk سواكَanyone but you السمعhearing عنهُfrom it محَّرمٌforbidden
فَكُلِّيَso my whole being مسلوبٌplundered وحسنكَand your beauty سالبُa plunderer
Talk of anyone but you is forbidden to my ears.
Talk of other than you, hearing it is taboo,
So my whole being is plundered, and your beauty is the plunderer.
So I'm stripped of all; your beauty's all I accrue.
يقولونَthey say ليto me تبْrepent عنof هوىpassion منthe one whom تُحبُّهُyou love him
فقلتُso I said عنof السلوانforgetting love إِنِّيَindeed I تائبُrepentant
They say to me, 'Repent of your passion for the one you love.'
They say "Repent loving whom you came to love!"
So I said, 'It is forgetting that I repent of.'
I said "I repent all but the willow's dew."
وإِنand even if كانit is عندَto الغيرothers صعبٌhard وواصبُand unremittingly painful
The torment of love is sweet to every lover,
Passion's torment is sweet for every lover,
Even if to others it is hard and unremittingly painful.
Though to others dire, persistent, and sober.
