1. سَلَبتْ لَيْلى مِّني العَقْلا

    قلتُ يا ليلى ارحمي القتلى

    Layla robbed me of reason.

    I said: O Layla, have mercy on the slain.

  2. حُبُها مكنونْ

    في الحشى مخزونْ

    Love for her lies hidden,

    Stored in the bosom.

  3. أيها المفتونْ

    هِمْ بها ذلا

    O captivated one,

    Lose yourself in love for her, humbly.

  4. إِنني هائمْ

    ولها خادمْ

    Indeed, I am lost in love,

    And I am her servant.

  5. أيها اللائمْ

    خَلِيني مهلا

    O reproacher,

    Leave me be; be gentle.

  6. لزمتُ الأعتابْ

    وطرقت البابْ

    I stayed at the thresholds,

    And I knocked at the door.

  7. قالتُ للبوابْ

    هل ترى وصلا

    She said to the doorkeeper:

    Do you foresee union?

  8. قال لي يا صاحْ

    مهَرْها الأرواحْ

    He said to me: O friend,

    Her bridal dower is souls.

  9. كم محبٍ راحْ

    يعشقُ القتلى

    Many a lover has gone,

    Loving the slain.

  10. أيها العاشِقْ

    إِن كنت صادقْ

    O lover,

    If you are sincere,

  11. للسوى فارقْ

    تغتنمْ وصلا

    Part from all else,

    You will gain union.
