سَكرْتُI grew drunk جَوَيَardent longing وبُحْتُand I spoke openly بِشَرحby describing حالِيmy state
وقُلْتُand I said نعمْyes عَشِقْتُI fell in love فلاso not أُبالِيI care
I grew drunk with ardent longing and openly described my state.
I was intoxicated with passion and confessed my state
And I said: Yes, I fell in love, so I do not care.
And said yes, I fell in love, so I do not care
I cast off (probable correction) عِذارَthe bridle of عِشْقيmy love فيin غَراميmy passion
وهِمْتُand I became love-mad وقدand indeed حَلاَgrew sweet عِنْديto me هِيامِيmy love-madness
I cast off the bridle of my love in my passion.
I ignored the reproach for my love in my passion
And I became love-mad, and my madness grew sweet to me,
And imagined that my infatuation was acceptable to me

مَذْهَبيmy creed دَنِّيmy wine jar
For the one we love and the cups of wine.
With whom do I keep company and cups of wine
My creed is my wine jar.
My way is base

الْهَوَىlove فَنِّيmy art
You who reproach me, leave me be.
My critic, leave me be
Love is my art,
Passion is my art

عشِقْتُI fell in love فماso what لعُذَّالِيfor my reproachers ومالِيand my wealth
Through giving my soul and my wealth for love.
By my sacrifice in passion of my soul and money
I fell in love—what have my reproachers to do with my wealth?
I loved so I do not care about the blamer and the money
طَرَقْتُI visited by night الْحَانَthe tavern والألحانِّand the melodies تُتْلاَare chanted
وراحُand wine لأُنْسِfor fellowship الْكاساتِthe cups فيin تُجْلاis unveiled
I visited the tavern by night as melodies were chanted.
I went to music and melodies chanting
And wine for fellowship is unveiled in the cups (wording unclear).
And the spirit of conviviality shone in vintage
وشاهَدْتُand I beheld الحبِيبَthe beloved وقدand already تَجَلِّىhe revealed himself
تَمَتَّعtake delight ياO مُعَنَّىtormented one بالْوِصالِin union
And I beheld the beloved as he revealed himself.
And I saw the beloved manifest
Take delight in union, O tormented one.
Delight, O meanings, in the union

مُدامَتُناour wine تَجِلُّis exalted عنْabove الْمِزاجdilution
For the veil has been lifted from beauty.
For the veil was lifted from beauty
Our wine is too exalted to be diluted.
Our wine shows its character when drunk
إِذاwhen شُرِبَتْit is drunk جلَتْit dispels ظُلَمthe darknesses of الدَّياجِيdark nights

When drunk, it dispels the gloom of dark nights.
It removes the darkness of night
And the wine of fellowship shines in the glass.
And the spirit of conviviality shines in the glass

عرُوسُa bride قدْرُهاher worth فيin الْمَهْرِthe dower غالِيhigh
You two, mix it for me.
Mixing with me
A bride whose worth commands a costly dower,
Its dowry as a bride is expensive
وأيْسرُand the least costly part of مَهْرِهاher dower مُهَجُthe lifeblood of الرِّجالِmen
شَطَحْتُI spoke in ecstasy علىover الْوُجودِexistence بِفَرْطِthrough the excess of عُجْبيmy self-admiration
And the least of her dower is men's lifeblood.
And the easiest dowry is the rapture of men
I spoke in ecstasy over existence, in my excessive self-admiration,
I roamed existence arrogantly
بِراحٍwith wine أشْرقَتْshone مِنْfrom دَنَّthe wine jar of قلْبيmy heart

With wine that shone from the wine jar of my heart.
With a spirit that shone from deep in my heart
And through it I found healing for all my distress.
I found through it healing from all my sorrows

It mended my fracture
So understand my secret,
So understand my secret

And accept my excuse
With this wine, in which the vines are
By the one whose spirit contains seductions
بَناتِdaughters of الْقَلْبِthe heart لاnot بنْتَa daughter of الدَّوالِيthe vines
Daughters of the heart—it is no daughter of vines.
The daughters of the heart, not the daughter of the seducer
