طابَ شربُ المدامِ في الخَلوَاتْ

أَسْقنيِ يانديمُ بالآنياتْ

أَسْقنيِ يانديمُ بالآنياتْ

How sweet to drink the wine in seclusion!

Sweet is the drinking of wine in solitary retreats.

Pour me a drink, my boon companion, from the goblets.

Give me drink, O boon companion, from the vessels:

خمرةً تَركُهَا عَليناَ حَرامٌ

خمرةً تَركُهَا عَليناَ حَرامٌ

ليس فِيها إِثمٌ ولا شُبُهاتْ

ليس فِيها إِثمٌ ولا شُبُهاتْ

It is a wine we are forbidden to forsake;

A wine we are forbidden to forsake,

there is neither sin nor cause for doubt in it.

In which there is no sin, nor anything doubtful.

عُتِّقت في الدِّنانِ من قَبل آدم

عُتِّقت في الدِّنانِ من قَبل آدم

أصلها طيبٌ من الطيباتْ

أصلها طيبٌ من الطيباتْ

It was aged in wine jars before Adam;

It was aged in wine jars before Adam;

its source is pure, from among all pure things.

Its origin is pure, from things good and wholesome.

أفْتِنيِ أيُّها الفقيهُ وقلْ لِي

أفْتِنيِ أيُّها الفقيهُ وقلْ لِي

هل يجُوزُ شربها على عَرفَاتْ

هل يجُوزُ شربها على عَرفَاتْ

Give me your ruling, O jurist, and tell me:

Give me a ruling, O jurist, and tell me:

May it be drunk at Arafat?

Is drinking it lawful on Arafat?

أو يجوزُ الطَّوافُ والسَّعْيُ بها

أو يجوزُ الطَّوافُ والسَّعْيُ بها

وَيَلَبَّى ويُرْمى بالخْمرَاتْ

وَيَلَبَّى ويُرْمى بالخْمرَاتْ

May one perform the circumambulation and ritual course with it,

Or are circumambulation and the ritual walk lawful with it,

and chant the pilgrim’s call and enter consecration with wines?

And may the pilgrimage chant be recited and the stoning performed with the wines?

أو يجوزُ القرآنُ والذكرُ بها

أو يجوزُ القرآنُ والذكرُ بها

أو يجوزُ التسْبيحُ في الصَّلوَاتْ

أو يجوزُ التسْبيحُ في الصَّلوَاتْ

Or are Qur’an recitation and remembrance of God permitted with it?

Or may the Quran be recited and God remembered with it?

Or is glorification of God permitted during the prayers?

Or is glorifying God during prayers lawful?

فأجاَبَ الْفِقيهُ إِنْ كانَ خمرَ

فأجاَبَ الْفِقيهُ إِنْ كانَ خمرَ

عنب فيه شيْ من المُسْكراتْ

عنب فيه شيْ من المُسْكراتْ

The jurist replied: If it is wine

The jurist then replied: “If it is wine

made from grapes, with something intoxicating in it,

Of grapes, containing something intoxicating,

شُربه عندنا حرامٌ يَقِيناً

شُربه عندنا حرامٌ يَقِيناً

زائدٌ فيهِ شيْ من الشبهاتْ

زائدٌ فيهِ شيْ من الشبهاتْ

then drinking it, in our view, is certainly forbidden;

Drinking it, in our view, is certainly forbidden;

moreover, there is an element of doubt in it.

Besides, there is something doubtful in it.”

آه ياذَا الَفقيه لَوْ ذُقْتَ منها

آه ياذَا الَفقيه لَوْ ذُقْتَ منها

وسمعتَ الألحْان في الخَلوَاتْ

وسمعتَ الألحْان في الخَلوَاتْ

Ah, O jurist, if you tasted of it

Ah, O jurist, had you tasted some of it,

and heard the melodies in seclusion,

And heard the melodies in solitary retreats,

لتركتَ الدُّنيا وما أنْتَ فِيه

لتركتَ الدُّنيا وما أنْتَ فِيه

وتَعشْ هَائما لِيَوْمِ المماتْ

وتَعشْ هَائما لِيَوْمِ المماتْ

you would leave the world and all that occupies you,

You would have forsaken the world and all you are caught up in,

and live love-lost until the day of death.

And lived wandering in love until the day of death.
