كيف يسلو من قد بلى

عن هواه أو يغفلِ

عن هواه أو يغفلِ

How can one who has been afflicted forget

How can one who's been afflicted find solace

his love, or grow heedless?

or be heedless of his passion?

أشغفَ القلبَ حبهُ

أشغفَ القلبَ حبهُ

يا أهل وِدي وين العِيش لي

يا أهل وِدي وين العِيش لي

His love has enthralled the heart.

His love has set aflame his heart -

O my dear ones, where is life for me?

O people of affection, where is comfort for me?

قالو من حبَّ اللهْ يموتْ

قالو من حبَّ اللهْ يموتْ

قلتُ أهلا بقاتلي

قلتُ أهلا بقاتلي

They said: Whoever loves God dies.

They said, "One who loves God will die from it,"

I said: Welcome to my slayer!

I said, "Greetings to my killer!"

إِنَّ في الموتِ راحةً

إِنَّ في الموتِ راحةً

للمحبِ إِذا بَلى

للمحبِ إِذا بَلى

Indeed, in death there is rest

For in death there is relief

for the lover when he is afflicted.

for the lover once he's suffered.

قالوا إِن كنت صادقاً

قالوا إِن كنت صادقاً

قمْ في الليلِ واسألِ

قمْ في الليلِ واسألِ

They said: If you are sincere,

They said, "If you are truthful,

rise in the night and ask.

rise in the night and ask:

إِن في الليل ساعةً

إِن في الليل ساعةً

لا تنمها يا غافلِ

لا تنمها يا غافلِ

Indeed, in the night there is an hour:

for in the night there is an hour

do not sleep through it, O heedless one.

that does not sleep, O heedless one."
