Grant me, from Your good pleasure, my Lord,

a robe, so that I may meet You pure.

How long I have wished to wear it!

O Generous One, clothe me in it.

I would like, Lord, a robe,

and may You fashion it for me from generosity.

And let its silk be Kufan,

    unlike what silkworms spin.

And I want a craftsman to weave it

    with tools of everything praiseworthy.

And let edgings be fashioned for it

    from pleasing deeds.

How long I have wished to wear it!

O Generous One, clothe me in it.

And let this cloth for it be

among the finest fabrics there are,

and purified with the water of ablution,

or with the tears of one who has just repented,

    free from impurities,

    and from ostentation and self-admiration,

until it grows fragrant and becomes

radiant with the light of guidance.

How long I have wished to wear it!

O Generous One, clothe me in it.

And let it be tailored for me, my Lord,

with the shears that sever attachments.

    And let voluntary fasting be

    the body and the gussets.

And let it be sewn as required

    with threads of truths.

    And let it have duties

    drawn from pleasing virtues.

How long I have wished to wear it!

O Generous One, clothe me in it.

    And let my right sleeve

hold my renunciation together with my certainty.

    And let my left sleeve

be my purity, my trusted one.

And let my breast-pocket be filled

with piety and the pillars of my faith.

And fold it for me, O God,

    with hidden graces from You.

How long I have wished to wear it!

O Generous One, clothe me in it.

    And from tears of love

let the beloved and the path be formed.

And let its weave be sound,

and its yarn pure and fine,

so that its workmanship comes out well-formed,

    well-proportioned and precise.

And let its border, O God,

be pure and free of flaws.

How long I have wished to wear it!

O Generous One, clothe me in it.

And through reverent fear, O Lord,

let the matter be made firm.

And let it grow fragrant at the remembrance of You,

and become more fragrant than incense.

And let there remain upon my tongue

the prayer for blessings upon Muhammad.

    How the servants would rejoice

if they were granted this gift!

How long I have wished to wear it!

O Generous One, clothe me in it.

For wearing this robe is, to my mind,

    the finest attire for hardship,

and the noblest of what is sought,

and of what is chosen and kept.

I fear meeting You, O my beloved,

    blackened and defiled by sins.

It is not an act of fairness.

O my God, turn to me in forgiveness.

How long I have wished to wear it!

O Generous One, clothe me in it.

    فَعَسَى نبلغْ أمانِي

    For a while I have hoped for it;

so perhaps I shall attain my wishes,

and may my state and my time grow sweet

    through my attaining my perfection.

So toward You, Lord, I yearn,

and upon You rests my reliance,

that You illumine my body with it

    before death comes.

How long I have wished to wear it!

O Generous One, clothe me in it.
