تَدْري مَنْ هَويتْ الذَّي

شغفْ قَلْبي حَتَّى انتْفَيت

شغفْ قَلْبي حَتَّى انتْفَيت

Do you know whom I loved—the one

Do you know who I fell for

who enraptured my heart until I ceased to be?

With passion until I was worn out?

مَضى ليْأمِنْ عُمري

مَضى ليْأمِنْ عُمري

مُدَّة مِنْ زَمَنْ

مُدَّة مِنْ زَمَنْ

There passed for me, from my life,

He went away to secure my life

a span of time.

For a period of time

والذيَّ يَقُلْ يَدري

والذيَّ يَقُلْ يَدري

أشْ يَدْرِي لِمَنْ

أشْ يَدْرِي لِمَنْ

And whoever says he knows—

And whoever says he knows why -

what does he know, and for whom?

Does he really know who for?

والذَّي عَمَرْ صَدري

والذَّي عَمَرْ صَدري

هُوَ الذي سَكن

هُوَ الذي سَكن

And he who filled my breast

And he who lived in my chest

is the one who dwelt there.

Is the one who settled

حتى إِن رأيتْ أنني

حتى إِن رأيتْ أنني

هُ محبوبي وأنا مادريتْ

هُ محبوبي وأنا مادريتْ

Until I saw that I

Until if I saw that I

was he, my beloved, and I had not known.

Am his beloved without realizing

يا فؤادي لمْ تَنْدُبْ

يا فؤادي لمْ تَنْدُبْ

قلي وَاشْ تُريد

قلي وَاشْ تُريد

O my heart, why do you lament?

Oh my heart why do you mourn

Tell me, what do you want?

Tell me what do you want

الحبيبْ نراك تَطْلبْ

الحبيبْ نراك تَطْلبْ

ولسْ هُو بَعيدْ

ولسْ هُو بَعيدْ

I see you seeking the beloved,

My love we see you search

yet he is not far away.

Yet he is not far

حقاً لَوْ دَريتْ اينه

حقاً لَوْ دَريتْ اينه

كَانْ يُكونْ فريد

كَانْ يُكونْ فريد

Truly, if you knew where he is,

Truly if I knew where he was

he would be peerless.

He would be unique

أنت أنت أنت الحبيبْ م

أنت أنت أنت الحبيبْ م

ع المحبوب ووصاله أنت

ع المحبوب ووصاله أنت

You, you, you are the beloved, with—

You, you, you are the beloved in me

the beloved; and union with him is you.

With the beloved and his company you are

طِيبْ وَعِشْ وَهِمْ

طِيبْ وَعِشْ وَهِمْ

وافرَحْ بين ذا الوجودْ

وافرَحْ بين ذا الوجودْ

Be glad, live, and wander in love,

Good, live, and pretend

and rejoice amid this existence,

And rejoice in this existence

الذي انتظمْ شَمْلَك

الذي انتظمْ شَمْلَك

كنظم النقودْ

كنظم النقودْ

in which your whole being came together,

That your life is threaded

like coins strung together.

Like threaded beads

وانبتهتْ مِنْ نومكْ

وانبتهتْ مِنْ نومكْ

والعوام رَقودْ

والعوام رَقودْ

And you awoke from your sleep,

And sprouted from your sleep

while the common folk lie asleep.

While the masses slumbered

يَا قَدْ انتهيتْ ووصلتْ

يَا قَدْ انتهيتْ ووصلتْ

للحضره وأنتَ مَا مشِيتْ

للحضره وأنتَ مَا مشِيتْ

Ah, you have reached the end and arrived

Oh you have come to an end and arrived

at the Presence, though you have not walked.

At the divinity while you did not walk

قَدْ سَلَكْتْ يا حَلاَّج

قَدْ سَلَكْتْ يا حَلاَّج

في هذا الطريقْ

في هذا الطريقْ

You have traveled, O Hallaj,

Truly you have taken, oh Hallaj

along this path.

This path

سَدِّدْ الديباجْ

سَدِّدْ الديباجْ

وانسج غَزْلكْ الرقيقْ

وانسج غَزْلكْ الرقيقْ

Set the brocade straight,

Make your prose right

and weave your fine yarn,

And spin your soft yarn

واكسي من حُلَكْ

واكسي من حُلَكْ

حُلَّة بيتك العتيقْ

حُلَّة بيتك العتيقْ

and from your finery clothe

And dress yourself in your resolve

your ancient house in a robe.

The robes of your ancient home

فإِذا انتهيتْ وبلغت

فإِذا انتهيتْ وبلغت

مرغوبك اكتم ما رأيت

مرغوبك اكتم ما رأيت

So, when you have reached the end and attained

So when you end and reach

your desired goal, conceal what you have seen.

Your desired one, conceal what you saw
