1. لاَ تَزِدْها بَيْت

    أنه بالوُجُود يَجُود

    Who is the one known

    to bestow Being freely?

  4. كيْف يُقال لُو كيْف

    والعوَام رُقُود

    How can “how” be said to Him,

    while the common people sleep?

  5. الرُّسُوم في ذَا الموضِع

    تفْنَى والْحُدُود

    Forms in this place

    vanish, and so do limits.

  6. أيْنَما مشَيْت

    أيْنَما مشَيْت

    Wherever I walked,

    wherever I walked,

  7. منْهُ لِيه بِهِ نمشي

    خَلِّ كَيْت وكيْت

    from Him, to Him, through Him I walk.

    Leave this and that aside.

  8. حسْبُكَ السَّمْعُ تسمع

    واتْرُكِ السِّوَى

    Hearing suffices for you to hear;

    and leave otherness aside.

  9. فالوُجُودُ في التحقيق

    سِين وَوَاوْ ويا

    For Being, in truth,

    is sīn, wāw, and yā.

  10. فحُذِ اسْم من تَهْوى

    واتْرُكِ الْعَيا

    So take the name of the one you love,

    and leave weariness behind.

  11. في السِّوَى فَنيْت

    في السَوَى فنَيْت

    In otherness you vanished.

    In otherness you vanished.

  12. إِن هرَبْتَ مِن وهْمُوا

    لِلْوُجُودْ بقَيْتْ

    If you flee from its illusion,

    you remain for Being.

  13. الْهُرُوبْ هُ عَيْن الوَهْمِ

    الَّذِي اعْترَض

    Flight is the very illusion

    that intervened,

  14. ويُسَمَّى مُنْجَرَّا

    أيْنَما انْفَرَضْ

    and is called a consequence

    wherever it is posited.

  15. مَن رَجَع لإثباتُه

    بعْدَ ما انْقَرضْ

    Whoever returns to affirming it

    after it has perished—

  16. قُل لو ارْتميْت

    قل لو ارتميت

    tell him: you have plunged,

    tell him: you have plunged,

  17. في البحر الجوهر

    بالْهُبوطْ رَقَيْت

    into the sea of essence;

    through descent you ascended.

  18. إِن شعَرت بكْ تشْعُر

    أنْتَ هُ الشُّعُورْ

    If you perceive, through yourself you perceive;

    you yourself are awareness.

  19. أو لَحَظْتَ قُربَ أو بُعْدْ

    أو ظلامْ ونُور

    Or if you observe nearness or distance,

    or darkness and light,

  20. أنْت ذاك تطوَّر بِك

    وعَليْك تَدُور

    you are that; it took form through you,

    and around you it revolves.

  21. كُلَّما رَأيْت

    كُلَّما رَأيْت

    Whenever you saw,

    whenever you saw,

  22. أنْت كُنْتَ في التطوير

    لكنَّكَ نسَيْتْ

    you were within the transformation,

    but you forgot.

  23. لاَشْ نَسَى ولاَشْ قالْ

    يا تُرَى لاَشْ ذَا

    Why did he forget, and why did he say,

    “I wonder, why is this?”

  24. قد عَرَف ويسْتفْهِم

    كِفْ يُقالْ لِذَا

    He has known, yet he asks—

    how can one speak to such a one?

  25. إِهْنا قالْ لِسانُ الحال

    أشْ دَعاهُ لِذا

    Here the tongue of the state spoke:

    What prompted him to this?

  26. كيْف وأنا انطويت

    كيْف وأنا انْطويْت

    How, when I have folded myself,

    how, when I have folded myself,

  27. عَلى كُلِّ ما يسْدُو

    وفيهِ اخْتفَيت

    over all that spreads forth,

    and hidden myself within it?

  28. أنتَ فِعْلي وأنت اسمِي

    وأنتَ هُ الْحُروفْ

    You are my act, and you are my name;

    and you are the letters themselves.

  29. بِك يُترجِمُ المبصر

    عَنِّي حين يشُوف

    Through you the seer speaks

    of me when he sees.

  30. الألْفِ مَثَالكْ

    هُ مظْهرُ الألُوفْ

    The alif is your likeness;

    it is the manifestation of thousands.

  31. فإذَا انتفيت

    فإذا انْتَفيْتْ

    So when you vanish,

    so when you vanish,

  32. أنْتَ ذاك وأنا الْباقِي

    بالظُّهور خفيت

    you are that, and I am the one who remains:

    through appearing, I was hidden.
