A visiting phantom haunted my eyes by night,

Of a cruel woman who came calling in the dark.

A vision of her took shape and stole through the night,

And so robs me of my reason with that dream.

Whatever I forget, I shall not forget her approach,

Swaying like a bough watered by steady rains.

And she appeared like the full moon of night,

That rose high in the sky and waxed full.

On her head was a blue headscarf,

And around her neck, a string of baram beads.

She kept no watch for the watcher's approach,

Nor felt abashed at the servants' arrival.

You have indeed grieved me, O bond of joy,

And sickened me, O cure of sickness.

Is this a visit, or a turning away?

And your visit—did it happen, or not?

And on a day like a bride's robe,

In beauty and fragrance whenever it is smelled,

I cast off my bridle and offered no excuse,

Nor felt abashed that day before the bashful.

And that day I matched the north wind's freshness

With pure wine and the plaintive strains of song.

May my soul be your ransom! This winter

Has already assailed us with its might.

And not a dirham of my wealth remains,

Nor of my clothes anything but tatters.

A breath of air leaves its mark on them,

And hidden stirrings of fancy wear them out.

    وأنت الرئيس ونحن الخدم

    And you are the mainstay, and we the supplicants;

And you are the chief, and we the servants.
