يَعيبُونهَاthey find fault with her عِنديin my presence وَلاand no عَيبَfault عِندَهاin her
يَعيبُونهَا عِندي وَلا عَيبَ عِندَها
سِوىexcept أَنَّthat فيin العَينينِthe two eyes بَعضُsome التَّأَخُرِmisalignment
سِوى أَنَّ في العَينينِ بَعضُ التَّأَخُرِ
They disparage her to me, though she is without a fault
They find fault with her before me, though she has no fault,
save that her eyes are set a little deep.

فَإِنso if يَكُthere is فيin العَينَينِthe two eyes شيءٌsomething فَإِنَّهاthen indeed she is
فَإِن يَكُ في العَينَينِ شيءٌ فَإِنَّها
مُهَفهَفَةُslender الأَعلىthe upper body رَداحُample المُؤَخَّرِthe rear
مُهَفهَفَةُ الأَعلى رَداحُ المُؤَخَّرِ
If there is something amiss with her eyes, still she is
If there is some flaw in her eyes, she is nonetheless
slender above and richly full behind—

قَطُوفٌslow-stepping إِذاwhen تَمشيshe walks تَخالُyou imagine دِماءَهاher blood
قَطُوفٌ إِذا تَمشي تَخالُ دِماءَها
تَسايَلُflows أَوor تَبدوappears لَهاto her بتَقَطُّرِin dripping drops
تَسايَلُ أَو تَبدو لَها بتَقَطُّرِ
so dainty-paced that, when she walks, you would think her blood
Slow-stepping, when she walks, you imagine her blood
were streaming, or showing itself in drops.
flowing, or showing itself upon her drop by drop.
إِذاwhen سِمتُهاI asked her for التَقبيلَkissing أَبدَتshe displayed تَشامُساًskittish resistance
إِذا سِمتُها التَقبيلَ أَبدَت تَشامُساً
ولينَand gentleness of كَلامٍspeech لَمnot يُشَبwas mingled بِتَهَذُّرِwith idle chatter
ولينَ كَلامٍ لَم يُشَب بِتَهَذُّرِ
When I ask her for a kiss, she feigns aloof resistance,
When I ask her for kisses, she shows coy resistance,
and her speech is gentle, untainted by frivolous jest.
and gentle speech untainted by idle chatter.
