فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you مَردودٌreturned عَليكto you خلالُكاyour ways
Take heed, you two: convey a message from me to Huṣayn:
For your ways are returned to you,
كَرَدِّlike the return of الأَداةِthe implement المُستَعارَةِborrowed إِنَّنيindeed I
I maintained ties with you حَتّىuntil عادَbecame صَرماًestrangement وِصالُكاyour friendship
like the return of a borrowed implement; indeed, I
kept ties with you until your friendship turned to estrangement.
وَكُنتَand you were إِذاwhenever مَدَّتextended يَمينُكَyour right hand ذَرعَهاits reach
لِتَفعَلَto do خَيراًgood تَعتَقِبهاholds it back شِمالُكاyour left hand
And whenever your right hand extended its reach
to do good, your left hand would hold it back.
لِسانُكَyour tongue مَعسولٌhoneyed وَنَفسُكَand your spirit بَشَّةٌcheerful
وَعِندَand at الثُريّاthe Pleiades مِنfrom صَديقِكَyour friend مالُكاyour wealth
Your tongue is honeyed, and your spirit is cheerful,
yet your wealth lies by the Pleiades, far from your friend.
