ياO مَنone who بِمَقتَلِهِthrough his slaying دَهىbrought calamity الدَهرُTime
قَدindeed كانَhad been مِنكَfrom you وَمِنهُمُand from them أَمرُa matter
O you through whose slaying Time brought calamity,
There had indeed been a matter between you and them.
زَعَمواthey claimed قُتِلتَyou were killed وَعِندَهُمand they had عُذرٌan excuse
كَذَبواthey lied وَقبرِكَby your grave مالَهُمthey have no عُذرُexcuse
They claimed they had an excuse for your slaying.
They lied—by your grave, they have no excuse.

May God bless you, O grave.
ماnot ضَرَّharmed قَبراًa grave أَنتَyou ساكِنهُits inhabitant
أَنthat لاnot يَمرّpasses بِأَرضِهِover its soil القَطرُthe rain
It does no harm to a grave where you dwell
That rain never passes over its soil.
فَليعدِلَنَّso ... shall surely equal سَماحَgenerosity كَفِّكَyour hand قَطرَهits rain
وَليورِقَنَّand ... shall surely sprout leaves بِقُربِكَnear you الصَخرُthe rocks
So its rain shall surely match your hand's generosity,
And the rocks shall surely sprout leaves beside you.
وَإِذاand when رَقَدتَyou slept فَأَنتَthen you are مُنتَبهٌalert

وَإِذاand when انتَبهتَyou awoke فَوجهُكَthen your face البَدرُthe full moon
And when you sleep, you are alert;
And when you wake, your face is the full moon.
وَإِذاand when غَضِبتَyou grew angry تَصَدَّعَتsplit apart فَرَقاًin fear

مِنكَof you الجِبالُthe mountains وَخافَكَand feared you الذُعرُterror
And when you grow angry, shattered in fear
Of you are the mountains, and terror itself fears you.

The one whom the grave has kept us from meeting.
ياO هاجِريone who forsakes me إِذwhen جِئتُI came زائِرَهُhis visitor
ماnot كانَwas مِنamong عاداتِكَyour habits الهَجرُforsaking
O you who forsook me when I came to visit him,
Forsaking was never among your habits.
واللَهِby God لَوif بِكَfor your sake لَمdid not أَدَعI spare أَحَداًanyone
إِلّاexcept قَتَلتُI killed لفاتنيwould have eluded me الوِترُblood vengeance
By God, had I spared no one for your sake
But killed them all, vengeance would still have eluded me.
