لا تَحمدَنَّ امرءً حَتّى تُجَرِّبَهُ

لا تَحمدَنَّ امرءً حَتّى تُجَرِّبَهُ

وَلا تَذُمَنَّهُ مِن غَيرِ تَجريبِ

وَلا تَذُمَنَّهُ مِن غَيرِ تَجريبِ

Never praise a man until you have put him to the test;

Do not ever praise a man until you have tested him.

nor ever condemn him without first testing him.

Nor ever censure him without testing.

فَحَمدُكَ المَرءَ ما لَم تَبلُهُ سَرَفٌ

فَحَمدُكَ المَرءَ ما لَم تَبلُهُ سَرَفٌ

وَذَمُّكَ المَرءَ بَعدَ الحَمدِ تَكذيبُ

وَذَمُّكَ المَرءَ بَعدَ الحَمدِ تَكذيبُ

For praising a man before you have tested him is excess,

For your praise of a man you have not tested is excess.

and condemning a man after praising him is to give yourself the lie.

And your censure of a man after praising him belies your praise.
