أَلاlisten أَبلِغاyou two, convey عَنّيfrom me زِياداًZiyad رِسالَةًa message
فَقَدfor indeed يُبلِغُmay deliver الحاجَthe request الرَسولُthe messenger المُغَلغِلُwho travels far
Listen, you two: convey a message from me to Ziyad.
For a far-ranging messenger may deliver the request.
بِآيَةِas a sign that أَنَّthat الوَلعَobsessive eagerness مِنكَfrom you سَجِيَّةٌan ingrained trait
لَهِجتَyou have indulged بِهاin it فيماwhether تَجِدُّyou are serious وَتَهزِلُor you jest
Tell him that obsessive eagerness is in your nature;
You indulge it whether speaking seriously or in jest.
وَأَنَّكَand that you تُعطيgive بِاللسانَwith the tongue وَلاand not يُرىis seen
مَتاعُكَyour possessions الّاexcept مِنfrom لِسانِكَyour tongue يَفضُلُexceeds
And you give with your tongue, while nothing is seen
Of your possessions that exceeds what your tongue offers.
لِسانُكَyour tongue مَعسولٌhoneyed فَأَنتَso you are مُمَزَّجٌmixed
وَنَفسُكَand your soul دونَwhen it comes to المالِmoney صابٌbitter aloe وَحَنظَلُand colocynth
Your tongue is honeyed, yet you are a mixture,
And your soul, where money is concerned, is bitter aloe and colocynth.
تَقولُyou say فَمَنso whoever يَسمَعhears يَقُلsays أَنتَyou are فاعِلٌone who acts
وَمِنand before دونِهِit بابٌa door مِنَof الشُحِّstinginess مُقفَلُlocked
You speak, and whoever hears you says, ‘You will act,’
But before the deed stands a locked door of stinginess.
نَعَمyes مِنكَfrom you لاno مَعروفَةٌkindness غَيرَexcept أَنَّهاthat it
تَغُرُّdeceives ويَرجوهاand hopes for it الضَعيفُthe weak person المُغَفَّلُthe gullible one
A ‘yes’ from you is no kindness, except that it
Deceives, and the gullible weak man hopes for it.
فَقُلso say لاno وَلاand do not تَعرِضhint بِهاat it أَوor نَعَمyes وَلاand do not
تَقُلsay لاno إِذاwhen ماindeed قُلتَyou have said إِنّيI سَأَفعَلُwill do
So say ‘no’ plainly, or say ‘yes’ and do not
Say ‘no’ after you have said, ‘I will do it.’
وَبِالصِدقِand with honesty فاستَقبِلso begin حَديثَكَyour speech إِنَّهُfor it
أَصَحُّsounder وَأَدنىand nearer لِلسَّدادِto what is right وَأَمثَلُand more fitting
Begin your speech with honesty, for it
Is sounder, closer to what is right, and more fitting.
وَأَجمِلand be gracious إِذاif ماindeed كُنتَyou are لاunavoidably بُدَّbound to مانِعاًrefuse
فَقَدfor indeed يَمنَعُmay refuse الشيءَthe thing الفَتىa man وَهوَwhile he مُجمِلُis gracious
And be gracious if you must refuse,
For a man may deny a request and still be gracious.
وَلاand no عِندَناin our view خَيرٌgood إِذاif كُنتَyou are باخِلاًmiserly
وَأَروَحُand easier مِنthan قَولٍsaying نَعَمyes ثُمَّthen تَبخَلُyou withhold
In our view, there is no good in being miserly,
And a frank refusal is easier than saying ‘yes’ and then withholding.
فَإِنso if ثَقُلَتweighs heavily لاno وَهيَwhile it غَيرُnot خَفيفَةٍlight
عَلَيكَupon you فَلَلأُخرىthen the other answer أَشَدُّmore severe وَأَثقَلُand heavier
If ‘no’ weighs heavily—and it is hardly light—
Upon you, the other answer weighs still more heavily
إِذاif هيَit لَمnot تُنفَذis carried out بِصِدقٍhonestly وَلَمand not يَكُنthere is
إِذاwhen اختُبِرتit is tested إِلّاexcept الضَلالُerror المُضَلِّلُthat misleads
If it is not carried out honestly and proves,
When tested, to be nothing but misleading deceit.
