إِذاif كُنتَyou are مَعنيّاًconcerned بِأَمرٍwith a matter تُريدُهُyou desire it
فَماthen there is no لِلمَضاءِfor resolve وَالتَوكُّلand trust in God مِنany مِثلِequal
If you are intent upon a purpose you desire,
If you are intent on a matter you desire,
nothing can equal resolve and trust in God.
Then resolve and trust in God have no equal.
تَوكَّلput your trust in God وَحَمِّلand entrust أَمرَكَyour affair اللَهَGod إِنَّindeed ماwhat
يُرادُis willed لَهُfor it آتيكَwill reach you أَنتَyou لَهُfor it مُخلِmaking way
Put your trust in Him, and entrust your affair to God; for what
Trust, and entrust your affair to God; indeed, what
is destined will come to you, though you leave it be.
Is willed for it will reach you, while you make way for it.
فَلاso do not تَحسَبنَّever suppose السَيرَtravel أَقرَبَcloser لِلرَدىto death
مِنَthan الخَفضِease فيin دارِan abode المُقامَةِsettled residence والثَملِand shelter
Do not suppose that journeying brings one nearer to death
So never suppose travel brings you nearer to death
than ease in a settled home amid indulgence.
Than ease in a home of repose and shelter.
وَلاand do not تَحبِسَنّيkeep me back عَنfrom طَريقٍa path أُريدُهُI desire it
بِظَنِّكَbecause of your conjecture إِنَّindeed الظَنَّconjecture يَكذِبُdeceives ذاone endowed with العَقلِreason
And do not hold me back from a road I wish to take
And do not keep me from a path I desire
because of your conjecture; conjecture deceives the rational mind.
Because of your conjecture; conjecture deceives the discerning.
فَإِنّيfor indeed I مُلاقٍwill meet ماwhat قَضىhas decreed اللَهُGod أَنَّنيthat I
مُلاقٍwill meet فَلاso do not تَجعَلmake لَكَfor you العِلمَknowledge كَالجَهلِlike ignorance
For I shall meet whatever God has decreed that I
For I shall meet whatever God has decreed that I
shall meet—so do not treat knowledge as ignorance.
Shall meet; so do not treat your knowledge as ignorance.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you لاnot تَدريyou know وَإِنand even if كُنتَyou are مُشفِقاًanxious
عَليَّfor me أَبَعديwhether after me ماwhat تُحاذِرُyou dread أَمor قَبليbefore me
For you do not know, however fearful you may be
For you do not know, though you are anxious
for me, whether what you fear lies after me or before me.
For me, whether what you dread comes after me or before me.

How many a wary, vigilant man have you seen
And how many a wary, watchful person you see
struck down, when death found him among his family.
Who was struck down, and whom death found among his family.
