ذَهَبتُI went وَكانَand was المَرءُa man يَبلوtests وَيُبتَلىand is tested
أُطالِعُI examine ماwhat قالَsaid المِجَرُّal-Mijarr بِنَson of مالِكِMalik
I went—and a man would test and be tested—
to examine what al-Mijarr, son of Malik, had said.
فَلَمso did not أَرَI see إِلّاexcept هَيجَthe raging ريحٍof a wind تَقَطَّعَتbroke apart
أَعاصيرَwhirlwinds فيin أَرضٍa land سُهوبٍvast plains مَهالِكِperilous wastes
So I saw nothing but the raging of a wind that broke
into whirlwinds across vast, perilous plains.
فَلاso no ذَنبَfault ليfor me لَوif كُنتُI were أَضطَرُّI force ضَيعَتيmy affairs
إِلىtoward جولِthe wall رَسٍّan old well مِنof حَجاًunderstanding مُتَماسِكِfirm
So I am not to blame if I were to force my affairs
toward the wall of an old well of firm understanding.
وَكُنتُand I was إِذاwhenever قَوَّمتُI straightened مِنهُof him طَريقَةًa manner
تَصاعَرَhe leaned askew مِثلَlike الحائِطِthe wall المُتَوارِكِtilting to one side
And whenever I straightened one of his ways,
he leaned askew like a wall tilting to one side.
