نُبِّئتُI was told أَنَّthat زياداًZiyad ظَلَّkept on يَشتُمَنيhe insults me
والقَولُand speech يُكتَبُis recorded عِندَwith اللَهِGod والعَمَلُand deeds
I was told that Ziyad kept insulting me,
and words and deeds are recorded with God.
وَقَدand indeed لَقِيتُI met زياداًZiyad ثُمَّthen قُلتُI said لَهُto him
وَقبلَand before ذَلِكَthat ماwhat خَبَّتhurried بِهِwith it الرُسُلُthe messengers
I had met Ziyad and then said to him—
and before that came what the messengers had hurried to convey—
حَتّىuntil ماwhat time? تَسرقُنيyou rob me فيin كُلِّevery مجمَعَةٍgathering
عَرضيmy honor وَأَنتَand you إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle شِئتَyou wish مُنتَقِلُchanging course
How long will you rob me, in every gathering,
of my honor, when you can change course whenever you wish,
وَمُكفِلُand making a guarantor of اللَهَGod بِالعُتبىfor amends وَمُعتَرِفٌand acknowledging
أَنthat قَدindeed ظُلِمتُI was wronged وَمُستَعِفٍand seeking pardon وَمُعتَذِلُand accepting blame
and make God your guarantor for amends, and acknowledge
that I have been wronged, seeking pardon and accepting blame?
ثُمَّthen اِنثَنيتَyou turned away وَنَفسيand my soul ماnot تواثِقُنيassures me
وَالغَدرُand betrayal بِالمَوثِقِof the pledge النِسيانُforgetfulness وَالعَجَلُand haste
Then you turned away, and my soul would not reassure me;
and forgetfulness and haste betray a solemn pledge.
كُلُّevery امرىءٍman صائِرٌreturning يَوماًone day لِشِيمَتِهِto his nature
فيin كُلِّevery مَنزِلَةٍcircumstance يُبلىis tested بِهاby it الرَجُلُthe man
Every man will one day return to his own nature,
in every circumstance by which a man is tested.
وَلَوand even if تَلَبَّثَhe lingers عَنهاaway from it غَيرَnot تارِكِهاabandoning it
إِلّاexcept إِلَيهاto it قَريباًsoon ثُمَّthen يَنتَقِلُhe moves
Even if he holds back from it, without forsaking it,
then, before long, he moves back to it alone.
إِذاwhen أَرادَhe wishes لَهاfor it تَركاًabandonment تَقَعَّدَهُit holds him back
كَماjust as تَقَعَّدَholds back ساقَthe leg of الموثَقِthe bound one الطِوَلُthe long tether
When he wishes to abandon it, it holds him back,
as a long tether holds back the leg of one tied fast.
