ذَكَرتُ ابنَ عباسٍ بِبابِ اِبنِ عامِرٍ

ذَكَرتُ ابنَ عباسٍ بِبابِ اِبنِ عامِرٍ

وَما مَرَّ مِن عَيشي ذَكَرتُ وَما فَضَل

وَما مَرَّ مِن عَيشي ذَكَرتُ وَما فَضَل

I remembered Ibn Abbas at Ibn Amir’s gate,

I remembered Ibn Abbas at the gate of Ibn Amir.

And I remembered what had passed of my life, and what remained.

And I recalled what had passed of my life and what remained.

أَميرانِ كانا صاحِبيَّ كِلاهُما

أَميرانِ كانا صاحِبيَّ كِلاهُما

فَكُلّا جَزاهُ اللَهُ عَنّي بِما عَمِل

فَكُلّا جَزاهُ اللَهُ عَنّي بِما عَمِل

Two emirs they were, both companions of mine;

Two emirs, both of whom were my companions.

So may God repay each for me according to what he did.

So may God recompense each on my behalf for what he did.

فَإِن كانَ خَيراً كان خَيراً جَزاؤُهُ

فَإِن كانَ خَيراً كان خَيراً جَزاؤُهُ

وَإِن كانَ شَرّاً كانَ شَرّاً كَما فَعَل

وَإِن كانَ شَرّاً كانَ شَرّاً كَما فَعَل

If it was good, then good shall be his reward;

So if it was good, may his recompense be good;

And if it was evil, then evil—just as he did.

And if it was evil, may it be evil, just as he acted.
