How can I deal with a friend who, if I draw near to him,

adds a cubit to the distance he keeps from me?

And if I reach out my arm to him in fellowship,

he widens the distance beyond a cubit’s measure to a fathom.

My soul refuses to offer him anything but closeness,

while his soul refuses anything but separation.

We both strive: I draw near, and he draws away—

thus, as far as I am able, and as far as he is able.
