أَلاHear now! اَبلِغاconvey, you two عَنّيfrom me حُصَيناًḤuṣayn رِسالَةًa message
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you قَدindeed قَطَّعتَyou have severed أُخرىthe last of خِلالِكاyour bonds of friendship
Hear now, you two: convey a message from me to Ḥuṣayn.
For you have indeed severed the last of your bonds of friendship.
رَأَيتَyou saw زَماناًan age قَطَّعَsevered الناسُthe people بَينَهُمamong themselves
عُرىthe bonds الحَقِّjustice فيهِin it فاقتَدَيتَso you followed بِذالِكاthat example
You saw an age in which people severed among themselves
the bonds of justice, and you followed that example.
فَلَوand if كُنتُI had إِذwhen خُبِّرتُI was told أَنَّكَthat you عامِلٌan official
بِمَيسانin Maysan تُعطيyou give الناسَthe people مِنfrom غَيرِother than مالِكاyour wealth
And had I, when told that you were an official
in Maysan, giving to people from wealth not your own,
سَأَلتُكَI asked you أَوor عَرَّضتُI hinted بِالوُدِّat the affection بَينَناbetween us
لَقَدsurely كانَwould have been حَقّاًa right واجِباًowed بَعضُsome of ذالِكاthat
asked you, or hinted at the affection between us,
some of that would surely have been my rightful due.
وَخَبَّرَنيand told me مَنthe one whom كُنتُI had أَرسَلتُI sent إِنَّماonly
أَخذتَyou took كِتابيmy letter مُعرِضاًturning away بِشِمالِكاwith your left hand
And the one I had sent told me that you merely
took my letter with your left hand, turning away.
نَظَرتَyou looked إِلىat عِنوانِهِits address فَنَبَذتَهُthen you cast it away
كَنَبذِكَlike your casting away نَعلاًa sandal أَخلَقَتit had worn out مِنfrom among نِعالِكاyour sandals
You looked at its address, then cast it away,
as you would cast away a worn-out sandal from among your sandals.
حَسِبتُI thought كِتابيmy letter إِذwhen أَتاكَit reached you مُعَرِّضاًhinting
لِسَيبكَfor your bounty لَمdid not يَذهَبvanish رَجائيmy hope هُنالِكاthere
I thought, when my letter reached you, hinting
at your bounty, that my hope there would not be lost.

What Nuʿaym ibn Maʿsūd did befits him,
and what you do likewise befits you.
