ذَهَبَdeparted الرِجالُthe men المُقتَدىfollowed as examples بِفِعالِهِمin their deeds
ذَهَبَ الرِجالُ المُقتَدى بِفِعالِهِم
وَالمُنكِرونَand the denouncers لَكُلِّof every أَمرٍact مُنكَرِreprehensible
وَالمُنكِرونَ لَكُلِّ أَمرٍ مُنكَرِ
Gone are the men whose deeds were models to follow,
Gone are the men whose deeds were examples to follow,
and those who denounced every reprehensible act.

وَبَقيتُand I am left فيamong خَلَفٍa later generation يُزَكّيcommends بَعضُهُمsome of them
وَبَقيتُ في خَلَفٍ يُزَكّي بَعضُهُم
بَعضاًothers ليَدفَعَso as to defend مُعوِرٌa flawed man عَنon behalf of مُعوِرِa flawed man
بَعضاً ليَدفَعَ مُعوِرٌ عَن مُعوِرِ
I am left among sorry successors, some of whom commend
And I am left among a later generation, some of whom commend
one another, so one flawed man may defend another.
others, so that one flawed man may defend another.
فَطِنٌalert لِكُلِto every مُصيبَةٍmisfortune فيin مالِهِhis wealth
فَطِنٌ لِكُلِ مُصيبَةٍ في مالِهِ
وَإِذاand when أُصيبَhe is harmed بِعِرضِهِin his honor لَمdid not يَشعُرِnotice
وَإِذا أُصيبَ بِعِرضِهِ لَم يَشعُرِ
Alert to every misfortune that touches his wealth,
He is alert to every misfortune affecting his wealth,
yet when his honor is assailed, he does not notice.
yet when his honor is harmed, he does not notice.
