أَبىrefused اللَهُGod الّاexcept أَنَّthat لِلأَزدِfor the Azd فَضلَهاtheir distinction
أَبى اللَهُ الّا أَنَّ لِلأَزدِ فَضلَها
وَأَنَّهُمُand that they أَوتادُstakes كُلِّall بِلادِlands
وَأَنَّهُمُ أَوتادُ كُلِّ بِلادِ
God would accept nothing but that the Azd have their distinction,
and that they are the anchoring stakes of all lands.
أَجارواthey sheltered زياداًZiyad حينَwhen أَسلَمَhe entrusted نَفسَهُhimself
أَجاروا زياداً حينَ أَسلَمَ نَفسَهُ
إِلَيهِمto them وَكانَand was الرأيُthe judgment رأيَthe judgment of زيادِZiyad
إِلَيهِم وَكانَ الرأيُ رأيَ زيادِ
They sheltered Ziyad when he entrusted himself
to them—and the judgment was Ziyad's.
فَأَصبَحَso he came to be فيin الحَدّانِal-Haddan وَالأُزدُand the Azd دونَهُbefore him, shielding him
فَأَصبَحَ في الحَدّانِ وَالأُزدُ دونَهُ
بسُمرٍwith brown-shafted spears كَأَشطانِlike the ropes of الجرورِthe deep well حِدادِsharp
بسُمرٍ كَأَشطانِ الجرورِ حِدادِ
So he came to be in al-Haddan, with the Azd shielding him,
with sharp, brown-shafted spears like the ropes of a deep well.
لَهُfor him مِنبَرٌa pulpit يَرقاهُhe ascends it فيin كُلِّevery جُمعَةٍFriday
لَهُ مِنبَرٌ يَرقاهُ في كُلِّ جُمعَةٍ
وَآلَةand the apparatus of مُلكٍrule شُرطَةٍa police force وَحشادِand a mustered host
وَآلَة مُلكٍ شُرطَةٍ وَحشادِ
He has a pulpit he ascends every Friday,
and the apparatus of rule: a police force and a mustered host.
