أَبلِغconvey أَباAbu (father of) الجارودِal-Jarud عَنّيfrom me رِسالَةًa message
يَروحُgoes in the evening بِهاwith it الماشيthe walker لِقاءَكَto meet you أَوor يَغدوgoes in the morning
Convey a message from me to Abu al-Jarud,
which a walker carries to meet you, at evening or in the morning,
فَيُخبِرُناso he tells us ماwhat بالُthe matter with صَرمِكَyour severing of ties بَعدَafter ماthat
رَضيتَyou were content وَماand not غَيَّرتَyou changed مِنany خُلُقٍtrait of character بَعدُsince then
so he may tell us why you have severed ties, after
you were content, though you have changed no trait since.
أَإِنis it because نِلتَyou gained خَيراًgood fortune سَرَّنيit gladdened me أَنthat تَنالَهُyou gain it
تَنَكَّرتَyou grew hostile حَتّىuntil قُلتُI said ذوone possessing لِبدَةٍa mane وَردُtawny
Is it because you gained good fortune I was glad for you to gain,
that you grew hostile, until I said, “A tawny, maned lion”?
فَعَيناكَfor your two eyes عَيناهُhis two eyes وَصَوتُكَand your voice صَوتُهُhis voice
تَمَثَّلتَهُyou assumed his likeness ليbefore me غَيرَexcept أَنَكَthat you لاnot تَعدوyou charge
For your eyes are his eyes, and your voice is his voice;
you have assumed his likeness before me, except that you do not charge.
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou were قَدalready أَزمَعتَyou resolved بِالصَرمِon severing ties بَينَناbetween us
فَقَدthen indeed جَعَلَتhave begun أَشراطُthe signs أَوَّلِهof its beginning تَبدوto appear
So if you have indeed resolved to sever the ties between us,
then signs of its beginning have already begun to appear.
وَكُنتُand I used to إِذاwhenever ماemphatic particle صاحِبٌa friend رَثَّgrew threadbare وَصلُهُhis bond of friendship
وَأَعرَضَand he turned away عَنّيfrom me قُلتُI said بِالمَطَرِwith the rain الفَقدُthe loss
And I would, whenever a friend's bond grew threadbare,
and he turned away from me, say, “A loss as welcome as rain!”
