وَأَهوَجَand a rash man مِلجاجٍrelentlessly quarrelsome تَصامَمتُI feigned deafness قيلَهُhis speech
أَنto اِسمَعَهُhear it وَماand not بِسَمعيَin my hearing مِنany باسِailment
And a rash, relentless arguer—I feigned deafness to his speech,
to avoid hearing it, though nothing ailed my hearing.
وَلَوand if شِئتُI wished ماnot أَعرَضتُI turned away حَتّىuntil أَصَبتُهُI struck him
عَلىon أَنفِهِhis nose خَدباءَa gaping wound تَعضِلُproves intractable بِالآسيto the healer
And had I wished, I would not have turned away before striking him
on his nose with a gaping wound that defies the healer.
فَإِنَّfor indeed الِلسانَthe tongue لَيسَis not أَهوَنُthe lightest وَقعِهِits stroke
بِأَصغَرَany smaller آثاراًmarks مِنَthan النَحتِhewing بِالفاسِwith an axe
For even the tongue's lightest stroke does not
leave slighter marks than hewing with an axe.
وَذيand one with إِحنَّةٍa grudge لَمdid not يُبدِهاreveal it غَيرَexcept أَنَّهُthat he
كَذيlike one with الخَبلِmadness تَأبىrefuses نَفسُهُhis soul غَيرَanything but وَسواسِobsessive whispering
And a man with a grudge he never revealed, except that he,
like one deranged, had a soul that refused all but obsessive whispering.
صَفَحتُI showed forbearance لَهُtoward him صَفحاًforbearance طَويلاًlong كَصَفحِهِlike his forbearance
وَعَينيand my eye وَلاand not يَدريhe knows عَليهِon him وَأَحراسيand my guards
I showed him long forbearance, matching his own,
while my eye and my guards were on him, though he did not know.
وَعنديand I have لَهُfor him إِنif ثارerupts فَوَّارُthe boiling صَدرِهِhis breast
فَحاًa pungent seasoning جَبَلِيٌّmountain-grown لاnot يَعودُreturns لَهُto it الحاسيthe sipper
And I had for him, should the boiling in his breast erupt,
a brew of mountain spice no drinker ever tries again.
تَنَقَّيتُهُI carefully selected it مِنfrom كُلِّevery مُرٍّbitter thing فَمِزتُهُso I set it apart
لِكُلِّfor every عُضاليٍّintractable مِنَof الداءِdisease نَكّاسِrelapsing
I selected it from every bitter thing and set it apart
for every intractable, relapsing disease,
شِفاءًas a cure وَتنجيزاًand a decisive resolution مَتىwhenever يَلتَبِسhe becomes entangled بِهِwith it
يُعالِجُhe deals with بَرءًrecovery لاnot يُريبكَmakes you doubt أَوor ياسِdespair
as a cure and a decisive resolution; whenever he encounters it,
he faces recovery that leaves you no doubt—or despair.
وَخَبٍّand a crafty rogue لُحومُthe flesh الناسِof people أَكثَرُmost of زادِهِhis provisions
كَثيرِabundant in الخَنىfoul speech بَعدَafter المَحالَةِscheming هَمّاسِa frequent whisperer
And a crafty rogue whose chief provision was people's flesh,
full of foul talk, whispering after his scheming:
تَرَكتُI left لَهُfor him لَحميmy flesh وَأَبقَيتُand I reserved لَحمَهُhis flesh
لِمَنfor whoever نابَهُcame upon him مِنamong حاضِرthose present الجِنِّthe jinn والناسِand humankind
I left him my flesh and reserved his flesh
for whoever came upon him among the jinn and people nearby.

So he strained a little, then turned away, as though
biting solid stones from the fabric of a firmly rooted mountain.
