ياO مَنyou who بِمَقتَلِهِthrough his slaying دَهىwrought calamity الدَهرُTime
قَدindeed كانَthere was مِنكَfrom you وَمِنهُمُand from them أَمرُa matter
O you, through whose slaying Time wrought calamity!
O you whose killing made time grieve,
A matter had indeed arisen between you and them.
There was a matter between you and them.
زَعَمواthey claimed قُتِلتَyou were slain وَعِندَهُمand they had عُذرٌan excuse
كَذَبواthey lied وَقبرِكَby your grave مالَهُمthey have no عُذرُexcuse
They claimed you were slain and that they had an excuse.
They claimed you were killed while they had an excuse,
They lied—by your grave, they have no excuse.
They lied, and for your grave they have no excuse.
ياO قَبرَgrave of سَيّدِناour lord المجنِّconcealing سَماحهhis generosity
صَلّىmay He send blessings عَلَيكَupon you اللَهُGod ياO قَبرُgrave
O grave of our lord, concealing his bounty,
O grave of our noble forgiving master,
May God bless you, O grave.
May God pray upon you, O grave.
ماnot ضَرَّharmed قَبراًa grave أَنتَyou ساكِنهُits inhabitant
أَنthat لاnot يَمرّpasses بِأَرضِهِover its ground القَطرُthe rain
A grave you inhabit suffers no harm
It does no harm to a grave when you inhabit it,
If rain does not pass over its ground.
That rain does not pass through its land.
فَليعدِلَنَّthen it shall surely equal سَماحَthe generosity كَفِّكَof your hand قَطرَهits rain
وَليورِقَنَّand it shall surely sprout leaves بِقُربِكَnear you الصَخرُthe rocks
Then surely its rain shall match your hand's bounty,
So may your forgiving palm make its rain just,
And surely the rocks shall put forth leaves near you.
And may the boulders bloom in your vicinity.
وَإِذاand when رَقَدتَyou sleep فَأَنتَthen you are مُنتَبهٌawake
وَإِذاand when انتَبهتَyou awaken فَوجهُكَthen your face البَدرُthe full moon
And when you sleep, you are awake;
When you sleep, you are awake,
And when you awaken, your face is the full moon.
And when you wake, your face is the full moon.
وَإِذاand when غَضِبتَyou grow angry تَصَدَّعَتsplit apart فَرَقاًin fear
مِنكَof you الجِبالُthe mountains وَخافَكَand fears you الذُعرُterror
And when you grow angry, they split apart in fear
And when you get angry, mountains crack into pieces,
Of you—the mountains—and terror itself fears you.
And creatures shiver in fear of you.
ياO ساكِنَdweller in القَبرthe grave السلامُpeace عَلىupon
مَنthe one whom حالstood as a barrier دونَbefore لِقائِهِmeeting him القَبرُthe grave
O dweller in the grave, peace be upon
Peace be upon the inhabitant of the grave,
Him whom the grave prevents me from meeting.
Whom the grave prevented from meeting us.
ياO هاجِريyou who shun me إِذwhen جِئتُI came زائِرَهُas his visitor
ماnot كانَwas مِنamong عاداتِكَyour habits الهَجرُshunning
O you who shunned me when I came to visit you,
O emigrant, when I came to visit you,
Shunning was never one of your ways.
Estrangement was never your way.
واللَهِby God لَوif بِكَfor you لَمdid not أَدَعI spare أَحَداًanyone
إِلّاexcept قَتَلتُI killed لفاتنيwould surely elude me الوِترُvengeance
By God, even if for you I spared no one
By God, if you were here, I would leave no one,
But killed them all, vengeance would still elude me.
Except I killed whoever separated us.
