تُعاتِبُنيshe reproaches me عِرسيmy wife عَلىfor أَنthat أُطيعَهاI obey her
لَقَدindeed كَذَبَتهاhas deceived her نَفسُهاher own soul ماwhat تَمَنَّتِshe hoped for
My wife reproaches me to make me obey her.
Her own soul has surely deceived her in what she hoped for.
وَظَنَّتand she thought بِأَنّيthat I كُلَّماwhenever رَضَيَتshe was pleased بِهِwith it
رَضِيتُI would be pleased بِهِwith it ياoh جَهلَهاher folly كَيفَhow ظَنَّتِshe thought
And she thought that whenever she was pleased with something,
I would be pleased with it—oh, her folly! How could she think so?
وَصاحَبتُهاand I kept her company ماin such a way لَوhad صَحِبتُI kept company with بِمثلِهِin the same way
عَلىdespite ذُعرِهاits fear أُروِيَّةًa female ibex لاطمَأَنَّتِit would surely have felt secure
And I have treated her in a way that, had I so treated
A female ibex, despite its fear, it would have felt secure.
وَقَدand indeed غَرَّهاhas deceived her مِنّيabout me عَلىdespite الشَيبِgray hair وَالبِلىand decay
جُنونيmy madness بِهاfor her جُنَّتmay she be driven mad حِياليbefore me وَخُنَّتِand may she be strangled
And what has deceived her about me, despite gray hair and decay,
Is my madness for her—may she go mad before me and be strangled!
وَلاand no ذَنبَfault ليis mine قَدalready قُلتُI said فيat بَدءِthe beginning أَمرِناof our relationship
وَلَوand had عَلِمَتshe understood ماwhat عُلِّمَتshe was taught ماnot تَعَيِّتِshe would have been at a loss
And I am blameless; I spoke at the outset of our life together.
And had she understood what she was taught, she would not have been at a loss.
تَشَكّىshe complains إِلىto جاراتِهاher female neighbors وَبَناتِهاand her daughters
إِذاwhen لَمnot تَجِدshe finds ذَنباًa fault عَلَيناagainst us تَجَنَّتِshe invents accusations
She complains to her neighbors and her daughters;
When she finds no fault in us, she invents one.
أَلَمdid you not تَعلَميyou know أَنّيthat I إِذاwhen خِفتُI fear جَفوَةًcold treatment
بِمَنزِلَةٍat a lodging أَبعَدتُI take far away عَنهاfrom it مَطيَّتيmy mount
Did you not know that, when I fear cold treatment
At a lodging, I take my mount far away from it?
وَإِنّيand indeed I إِذاwhen شَقَّتshe makes things hard عَليَّfor me قَرينَتيmy companion
ذَهَلتُI forget وَلَمand do not أَحنِنI yearn إِذاwhen هيَshe حَنَّتِyearns
And whenever my companion makes life hard for me,
I forget her and do not yearn when she yearns.
