تَعَلَّمknow يَقيناًfor certain أَنَنّيthat I لَكَtoward you ماقِتٌfull of loathing
وَليand I have شيمَةٌa trait تَعتابُهاyou reproach it وَتَذيمُهاand you disparage it
Know for certain that I loathe you.
You've certainly learned that I utterly detest you,
And I have a trait you reproach and disparage.
And I have a trait that rebukes and condemns you.
وَكُنتُand I was وَلَكنّيand yet I امرُؤٌa man فيin خَليقَتيmy nature
بَذاءٌfoul-mouthed لِمَنtoward whoever يَرضىis pleased بِهاwith it وَيَلومُهاand blames it
And I was—and yet I am—a man, by nature,
And I was, but I'm a man in his nature,
foul-mouthed toward whoever approves of it and blames it.
Vile towards whoever accepts it and blames it.
شَنِئتُI loathed مِنَamong الصُحبانthe companions مَنthe one whom لَستُI am not زائِلاًceasing

Among companions, I loathe the one I never cease
I've come to dislike, of all companions, those whom I won't leave behind;
trying to cure of a crookedness I cannot straighten.
I address in them a crookedness I do not straighten.
