If you are intent upon a matter you desire,

Then nothing equals resolve and trust in God.

Trust, and entrust your affair to God; indeed, what

Is destined for it will come to you, while you leave the way clear for it.

So never think that traveling is nearer to death

Than ease and drunkenness in a settled home.

And do not hold me back from a road I wish to take

Because of your conjecture: conjecture deceives a man of reason.

For I shall meet what God has decreed that I

Shall meet; so do not treat your knowledge as ignorance.

For you do not know, though you are anxious

For me, whether what you dread will come after me or before me.

And how many a wary, vigilant man you see

Struck down—and death found him among his family.
