Ho, you two, carry a message from me to Ziyad—

a missive to him, wherever on earth he may be.

Why are you so sullen whenever you meet me,

averting your eyes from me like one who lowers his gaze?

And why, when affection between us grows threadbare,

do I twist its strands tight while you work to unravel them?

Have you not seen that I do not change my character

as the night-ghoul changes form in the open country?

But I strike the enemy with a devastating blow

that splits the earth lengthwise and across.

Nor am I a secretive, sluggish, cunning man,

like a coward's fever: it never abates, nor does he die.

Nor am I a feeble, slender pretender,

generous with false promises and praise.

Nor am I like water on a flat plain, thought enough to quench thirst,

but found shallow and slippery after one has thirsted for it.

So inquire about me, and do not be shy before me; for

that is how some people inquire about others.
