Convey to Ḥuṣayn, when you come to him,

a reply and an admonition for you therein—

a message, if you possess understanding,

perceptive and discerning about what befalls you.

And among the best things men undertake

is a wise man's counsel to whoever seeks it out.

So do not be like the creature that drew out

a knife with her cloven hooves, or with her mouth.

    وَمَن تَدَعُ يَوماً شَعوبُ يَجيها

    Then a slaughterer advanced upon her with it;

and whoever Shaʿūb—Death—summons one day comes to her.

So her pot, with her limbs inside it, kept

scorching the maidservant, or roasting her.

For if you refuse and will not desist,

and do not deem this akin to sincere counsel,

I shall make you swallow bitter sap; and the bitter herb

and bitter sap were of old a loathsome drink.
