وسائلٍ عن حِماريّ كيف جَالُهمَا

سَلْني فَعِندي حقيقهُ الخبرِ

سَلْني فَعِندي حقيقهُ الخبرِ

You who ask about my two donkeys and how they fare,

ask me, for I have the truth of the matter.

لاَ خيرَ في صاعدٍ فتطلبه

لاَ خيرَ في صاعدٍ فتطلبه

والخيرُ يأتيك من يَدَي مطرِ

والخيرُ يأتيك من يَدَي مطرِ

There is no good in Ṣāʿid for you to seek;

and good comes to you from Maṭar’s two hands.

وأيّ خير يأتيك من رجلٍ

وأيّ خير يأتيك من رجلٍ

ليس لأنثى يُدْعى ولا ذكرِ

ليس لأنثى يُدْعى ولا ذكرِ

And what good can come to you from a man

whose descent is traced to neither woman nor man?

ليسَ له غيرَ نفسه نَسَبٌ

ليسَ له غيرَ نفسه نَسَبٌ

كأنه آدمٌ أبو البشرِ

كأنه آدمٌ أبو البشرِ

He has no lineage but himself,

as though he were Adam, the father of mankind.
