لِيَهْنِmay it gladden أباAbu (father of) العباسِal-Abbas رَأىُthe decision إِمامِهِhis imam
وماand ... not عِنَدهُwith him منهُfrom him القَضاthe judgeship بمَزيدِan addition
May his imam's decision gladden Abu al-Abbas;
May Abu al-Abbas be congratulated, he saw the vision of his leader,
And the judgeship adds nothing to his standing with him.
And what he decided exceeded all expectations,
دَعاهُhe summoned him أميرُCommander المؤمنينthe Faithful إلىto التيthat which
يُقصِّرfalls short عنهاof it ظَلُّthe shadow كلِّevery عَميدِchieftain
The Commander of the Faithful summoned him to that station
The Commander of the Faithful called him to take up a task,
Of which every chieftain's shadow falls short.
That surpassed what any towering figure could accomplish,
فبادَرَهاso he hastened to it بالرّأيwith judgment والحَزمِand resolve والحجىand wisdom
وَرَأيُand the judgment أبيAbu (father of) العباسal-Abbas رأيa judgment سَديدِsound
So he hastened to it with judgment, resolve, and wisdom;
So he readily responded with wisdom, decisiveness and eloquence,
And Abu al-Abbas's judgment is sound.
The insight of Abu al-Abbas is truly judicious,
نَهضْتَyou rose to undertake بماwith what أعياoverburdened الرِّجالُthe men بحملِهِin bearing it
وَأنتَand you بِسَعدٍwith good fortune حاضِرٍpresent وسعيدِand favorable
You shouldered what men found too hard to bear,
You took up what exhausted even the strongest men,
And good fortune is with you, present and favorable.
And you, with blessings and fortune, were prepared and ready,
رَدَدتَyou restored بهاthrough it لَّلرائدينto the scouts أعَزّهُمtheir most honored one

Through it, you restored to the scouts their most honored man;
With it you turned back the proudest raiders,
And one like you joins newly won honors to inherited ones.
The like of you returning even the veteran warrior to renewed zeal,

He spared Asad the fetters' constriction and anguish,
It is enough that a lion constrained the passes and straits,
And was compassionate toward him, like Yazid.
And was a protector over them like Yazid,
وحَصَّلَهُand secured him فيهاwithin it كَليثٍlike a lion غضَنْفَرٍmighty

And secured him there like a mighty lion,
And achieved in them what a fierce, angry lion,
A father of cubs, stout-armed and long-bodied.
The father of Ashbal, the long-armed Abd al-Dhiyaf, would.
