Why did you not ask the dwelling-place in Saihat

about those young men and maidens,

and the trails of the steeds' halters, as though they were

snakes' winding paths across the ground,

and the ships' rowing-grounds, where its land lies nearest

to its sea, and the kneeling-grounds of camel herds,

where ears can scarcely recover from

    a sailor's refrains and the camel-drivers' cries?

Indeed, as for Qatif—though I am consumed with love for it,

and my sighs rise with longing to dwell there,

since wherever I pass, I see there the path I trod

as a child, and my peers there, my age-mates—

my highest aim and utmost wish

is to dwell within those grounds.

So may the clouds, when their caravan sets out, water

those spacious precincts and open courts.

And may the rain-clouds, pregnant as she-camels, pass and blanket

with rain the land from 'Unak to Nabakat,

until it is mantled in fresh growth, and

its knolls are clothed in budding flowers.

O so-and-so, there has occurred to me, concerning you,

a request whose mention debases my verses.

Nothing could be more modest, yet I

count it among the greatest impositions.

So I have referred it to you: that you send a turban,

    silvery, with golden trailing ends.

Its remaining hue resembles fair women's cheeks,

    with borders red as blushing cheeks;

or the hue of your bright swords when they are drawn,

and when they return with reddened blades.

Forgive, and overlook the offense, for among

the traits of the noble is forgiving slips.

For one who asks a trifle of you is like one who asks

the rain for a single drop.

This I say; and I swear by al-Muhassab in Mina,

and by the pilgrim company's standing at 'Arafat,

and by a man's hair cast off there,

and by the blood of a sheep shed there:

had I not believed of you that you would buy

the praises of mine that others deemed too dear,

I would not have turned the face of my hope toward you—no, nor

opened my throat to you with a request.

For I, even if time bites at my withers,

or the days blunt the edge of my blade,

will surely, too proud to praise the base, safeguard

my poetry, and halt my steps short of them.

And unveil her, a virgin but a brief hour old,

from the choicest of what my words have bestowed.

Were she recited, al-Ta'i would discard beside her

“How dear to me is the approaching phantom of Su'da.”

And welcome the blessed Eid, having laden

Ramadan with fasting and with prayers.

And profit from the reward you have been granted for the

past, and rejoice in the good fortune of what is to come.
