To Ibrahim belong my pure devotion and love,

And my heart's purity and my faithfulness to my pledge.

A youth who, ever since there were hung upon him

His amulets, has kept bestowing bounty, again and anew.

Those who saw him discerned goodness in him,

When newborn, still in swaddling cloths and a cradle.

No man his equal ever trailed in pride

The hems of a fine robe and the folds of a striped cloak.

    Radiant—on him I rely whenever

Mankind shuns me, and to him I return.

You seem to draw light from him as from a crescent,

When you face him—or a star of good fortune.

I swore to reserve my gratitude for him,

And my praise, despite the world's longing for him.

I have not clothed him in the robes of my praise

For some kindness I hope for, or a gift.

Though all mankind are children of his bounty,

Their very beggar gives from what he bestows on him.

For this is the praise of a brother in sincere affection,

Among friends, not the praise of a beggar.

O Ibrahim, O nearest of all mankind

For me to run to, and farthest from wrongdoing.

I complained to you of the companions of my nights—

May they be repaid with evil for what they did to me!

They insisted on shunning me and pelting me,

Despite my love for them, with hatred and rejection.

Was this the reward for what I spread abroad about them,

Words that will endure after me?

For poetry's rhymes are spent, so often do I

Illumine their praises with them and weave

Double-layered cloaks of praise, as though I

Had woven rings of mail for them with these.

Whenever, one day, these are cast upon them,

They shield them from the might of Khatti spear and Indian sword.

Had I been treated fairly when I offered my counsel

To them, and gave them my sincerest love,

And suffered what I suffered on their account,

They would have enfolded me between their entrails and liver.

    فما أَدرِي بِلَومِي مَنْ أُبدِّي

    The affection of these people has changed, one and all;

So I do not know whom to blame first.

May the blame they bear not infect you, for I

Have often seen blame prove contagious.

How many a free man I grew attached to in the morning

Was by evening wearing a slave's clothes!

Were it not that they would say, 'This man is mad,'

And that, if I cut, I cut my own skin,

I would have spared no one; yet I

Ease some of my anguish through complaint.

So, son of Muhammad ibn Taqi, hear

The praise of one preeminent in verse, without a peer:

Clouds that, if they visit your assembly, draw away,

Their showers leaving pools of honey behind.

Mankind shares with me in poetry, unjustly,

Though I alone am foremost in it.
