وبِيْضُ المَنَايا من دِمَائِهُمُ حُمْرُ
The hands of mortals are empty of their inheritance,
The yellow hands have inherited their legacy,
and the white swords of death are red with their blood.
And the white of death is from their blood red.

تقاتلُنَا فُرْسانُها ولها النَّصْرُ
The horses of calamity remain ever ready;
The horses of misfortune are still prepared,
their riders fight us, and victory is theirs.
Their horsemen fight us and they have victory.

White swords and brown spears charge upon us with death,
The white and the brown attack us with calamity,
attaining what white swords and brown spears cannot attain.
Reaching what neither white nor brown can reach.

لأَعْذَبُ شيءٍ عندَنا ذَلكَ المُرُّ
The watering-place of this age is bitter, yet
The course of this life is bitter, yet for us,
that bitter draught is the sweetest thing to us.
That bitterness is the sweetest thing.

My two friends among the sons of Bakr ibn Wa'il,
My friend from the Bani Bakr tribe,
stand and mourn an elder whose loss has bereaved Bakr;
Stop and mourn for a shaykh who brought anguish to Bakr.

and a full moon that appeared to gazing eyes, which found guidance
A full moon appeared to onlookers and guided
by it for a while; then that full moon vanished;
Burhah for a moment, then that moon disappeared.

and a keen sword whose edge the hands of calamity bent—
Calamity bent its blade against him
why were those hands not wounded by its strokes?
So why didn't his thrusting spear counter it?

O archer of death, you missed us and struck him.
You who lie in the dust aimed the arrows of misfortune at us
You wronged us; may all ten of your fingers be severed!
And hit him - you did us wrong when your fingers missed their mark.

So, O you who lie at rest, who have taken the earth
O you who settled in the earth as a dwelling,
as your abode, why was my breast not your grave?
Why wasn't my chest your grave instead?

And why did the washers not choose my tears
Why didn't the washers consult my tears
to wash your body, then mix lote leaves with them?
To wash your body, turning the myrtle trees white?

For if pure water is used—despite anyone who
If the washing water was seen as impure despite
deems it a purifier for you—you are its purifier.
Being cleansing for you, then you are purity itself.

And though your white shrouds decay in the earth,
If your white shrouds are worn in the earth,
your goodness has not decayed, nor has your remembrance.
Then neither your kindness nor your mention are worn.

O Awal, may you be watered by the downpour of every thundering
My tears were poured towards every rumbling
rain cloud, pouring freely, whose drops never dry.
Cloud heavy with rain whose drops never cease.

You seem a magnet for every refined man:
It is as if you are a magnet to every refined one -
no perfect man exists but has a grave in you.
No one is perfect unless in you he has his grave.

May you rejoice in the honor of having gained a plot of earth
May it bring you pride that you obtained earth
that al-Ghafr cannot attain, its cheek laid in the dust.
Whose cheeks blush without attaining forgiveness.

A lord from the house of al-Muqallad rests within you;
A master of the adorned family lies in you,
he is pure gold, and the world is brass.
He is golden, brilliant, and learned.

A man whose fathers and forefathers were noble,
His fathers and forefathers were generous,
and whose endeavors were good, so his glory was complete.
And his efforts were fruitful, bringing him pride.

Chaste beneath his cloak, free of every lapse;
Virtuous, wearing the coat of chastity, safe from sin,
and his ear is deaf to every indecency.
In his ear a barrier against every lewdness.

Generous, with a sea in every fingertip;
Generous, in each of his fingers an ocean,
perceptive, with thought in every limb.
Perceptive, in each of his senses deep wisdom.

And O land of al-Khatt, his loss has dealt you
O city of calligraphy, loss of him for eternity
a fracture for all time, beyond all hope of mending.
Is a wound for which there is no mending.

لمُتَّصِلٌ بَاقٍ وآخِرُهُ الحَشْرُ
From now, misfortune begins in you, and it
From now begins the evil in you, which
will surely endure without cease, ending only at the Resurrection.
Continues, remaining until the Day of Judgment.

What young man does not fear wronging his neighbor?
you have lost—and an ease unmingled with hardship!
You have lost a comfort not mixed with hardship,

And a lion of battle: had he faced a lion unarmed
A lion, though fierce when facing a lion unarmed,
and fought it, its fang and claw would not have availed it.
Who fights him cannot be helped by fang or victory.

and the supple, straightened brown spears would have been set quivering,
The trained brown steeds roused,
and the marked chestnut horses would have advanced.
The marked blond horses mobilized,

Upon them, youths from the house of al-Muqallad,
Against them, from the adorned family, some youths
kindlers of war, in which no blood-debt goes unavenged.
Like the sparks of war, for whom no bowstring breaks.

Their hands straighten the bent shafts of spears
They train the necks of the lances if they are short,
and give them length when shortness mars them.
As if they and the horses in armor on them

They seem, with full coats of mail upon them,
Are shining stars when the darkness of battle descends.
when battle's night grows dark, to be radiant stars.
If kindness made one man immortal,
ولوand if خَلَّدَimmortalized المعروفُkindness فيamong الناسِmankind وَاحِداًone person

لَخلَّدَ عبدَاللهِ نَائِلُهُ الغَمْرُ
And if kindness could immortalize a single person among mankind,
It would make immortal Abdullah, who attained its perfection.
his overflowing bounty would have immortalized Abdullah.

But such are the days: they came to him seeking
His life, so he graciously granted it that request.
a gift, and he granted them a gift—his life.
So greetings, O his grave, may its vegetation bloom
فياso, O قَبرَهُhis grave حَيَّاكَmay greet you مُنْعَبِقُthe wafting fragrance الكَلاof herbage

So, O his grave, may fragrant herbage greet you,
And scatter flowers around you.
and may blossoms unfurl their mantles around you.

His sons, be patient, for patience is the finest robe
That covers one touched by harm.
worn by one whose side affliction has touched.
If not for the passing of years, time itself would not perish,

For without the passing of years, time would not perish,
If not for the death of days, the months would not run out.
and without days perishing, the month would not be spent.
Below you is a pearl of deep thought,

And take a pearl from the depths of thought,
Strung together, prose and verse inspired by it.

and a virgin, a secluded maiden of noble speech:
Poetry boasts no equal to her.
in poetry, poetry takes pride in her like.
Her bride price is only your acceptance,

And her dower is nothing but your acceptance of her;
She was honored for little, but her worth is high.
she is indeed noble, endowed with her dower, and precious is the dower.
