O you who dwell, though the place that holds you is far away,

where the body is joined with the soul:

If it were within my power to confide to you

my longing, and complain to you of my anguish and torment,

I would make the expanse of pages too narrow for it; and if

I made the wind bear it, it would sap the wind's strength.

Nothing would be happier than I, if I were brought back

to you by my long journeys at dawn and evening.

    إنْ قَصَّرَتْ قُلْتُ من وَجْدِي لَها نُوحِي

    But for you, I would not have lent an ear to a singing bird;

if its song faltered, I would tell it in my anguish, "Lament!"

It lamented; and had it felt my anguish for you, it would have wept

like me, with tears streaming down both cheeks.

So may a sorrow-stricken man's greeting follow you wherever you are—

so stricken that he is seen in the garments of a slaughtered man.
