O master, whose bounty has such great

    and glorious effects upon me!

    These are your gifts, which

gave mankind a first draught, then another.

Why have they grown abundant for

others, yet dwindled for me today?

I do not know what sin

made my foot stumble and slip.

A calamity, by my father's life, too vast

for heaven and all it shelters.

    Earth cannot bear

your coldness, nor can all it carries.

    No wonder the hosts retreated—

those of my pride—unwillingly, and fled,

while the swords of your reproach, O dearest

of all people to me, have been drawn.

    O Husayn, indeed I—by Him

before whom faces bowed and were humbled—

    remain faithful, as you know,

even if a soul grows cold and ails.

May dust cover any hand that clings

to anyone but you, or is moistened by another's bounty.

This I avow: if my hand is stretched

to beg of anyone but you, may it be paralyzed!
