أَمَوْلَىO master الوَرَىmankind إنِّيindeed I جَعلْتُكَI appointed you فيin الذِيwhat

O master of mankind, I have appointed you, in the matter that
arose yesterday between me and you, as judge.
علَىon condition أنَّهُthat it إنْif رَدَّrejects حُكْمَكَyour judgment وَاحِدٌone person
فإنَّكَthen indeed you تَلْقَانِيyou will find me بِحُكْمِكَwith your judgment رَاضِيَاcontent
On the understanding that, if anyone rejects your judgment,
you will find me content with your judgment.
فَدَيتُكَI would ransom you والنَّاسُand the people الذيِنَwhom تَرَاهُمُyou see them
إذَاwhen حُمَّis decreed ماwhat لاno بُدَّescape مِنهُfrom it فِدَائِيَاmy ransom
I would ransom you; and the people you see
are my ransom when the inevitable is decreed.
أيَحْسُنُis it fitting? إنعالَيْكَmy shoeing you خَدِّيmy cheek كَرَامَةًin homage
وتَتْرُكُنِيand you leave me أمْشِيI walk علَىon الشَّوكِthorns حَافِيَاbarefoot
Is it fitting that I make my cheek your sandal in homage,
while you leave me to walk barefoot on thorns?
وتَشْرَبُand you drink منfrom كَفِّيَmy palm فَماًa mouthful يَقتُلُkills الصَّدَىthirst
وأشْرَبُand I drink مِنْكَfrom you ماwhat يَزيدُincreases ظَمَائِيَاmy thirst
And you drink from my palm a mouthful that kills thirst,
while I drink from you what increases my thirst.
أَلَمْdid ... not? تَرَنيyou see me استقْبلْتُI faced أَوْجُهَfaces شقْوتِيmy misery
لَدَيكَat your side وخَلَّفتُand I left النَّعيمَbliss ورَائِياbehind me
Did you not see me turn toward the faces of my misery
at your side, and leave bliss behind me?
وُجُوهُfaces أحبَّاءٍloved ones تَبدَّلْتُI took in exchange مِنْهُمُin their place
وُجُوهfaces رِجَالٍmen يُتَّقَوْنَare guarded against أَعَادِيَاas enemies
Faces of loved ones, in whose place I have taken
the faces of men feared as enemies;
وأَفْلاذُand pieces أكْبَادٍlivers تَذُوبُmelts عَليهِمُfor them
ورَاءَbehind دُمُوعِيmy tears قِطْعةٌa piece منof فُؤَادِيَاmy heart
and children, pieces of the liver, for whom there melts
behind my tears a piece of my heart.
يَنَالُattains الجَفَاestrangement والضُّرُّand harm منهُمْfrom them مُرَادَهُits aim
وهَانَand it would be bearable لوif انِّيthat I نِلتُI attained مِنْكَfrom you مُرَادِيَاmy desire
Estrangement and harm have their way with them,
yet that would be bearable if I gained from you what I desire.
وحَادِثَةٍand a calamity أنْزَلتَهَاyou brought it down بِيupon me لوif انَّهاthat it
بِرَضْوَىupon Radwa لخَوَّىwould have buckled جَانِبَاهُits two flanks تَدَاعِيَاin collapse
And a calamity you brought upon me—had it fallen
on Radwa, both its flanks would have buckled and collapsed.
يَغُضُّlowers لَهَاbefore it منof طَرْفِهِits gaze نَاظِرُthe eye العُلاَglory
ويكْسِرُand lowers منof جَفْنَيهِits two eyelids عَنهَاaway from it تَعامِيَاfeigning blindness
The eye of glory lowers its gaze before it,
and droops its eyelids, feigning blindness to it.
وهَبْand suppose أنَّهَاthat it لَمْdid not تَأْتِcome عَنْكَfrom you وإنَّمَاbut rather
رَمَانِيhurled at me بِهاwith it مَنْsomeone who شَلَّهُmay He paralyze him اللَّهُGod رَامِيَاas a hurler
And suppose it did not come from you, but rather
someone hurled it at me—may God paralyze that hurler!
فَمَالَكَthen what ails you? قَدْindeed أغْفَيتَyou dozed off عندَduring مَسَاءَتيmy being wronged
وهَانَand was trivial عَليكَto you عندَat ذَاكَthat moment هَوَانِيَاmy humiliation
Then why did you doze off when I was wronged,
and why was my humiliation so trivial to you then?
وإنَّand indeed قَرَارِيmy remaining still عندَهاbefore it واستِكَانَتيand my submission
علَىdespite خَجَلٍshame منْهَاat it وفَرْطand the excess of حَيَائِيَاmy modesty
Indeed, my remaining still before it, and my submission,
despite my shame at it and my excessive modesty,
يَرُدُّrestores عَلَىto ابنِson of العَاصِal-As عَمْروAmr حَيَاءَهُhis modesty
ويُلْبِسُand clothes عِرْضِيmy honor عندَat تِلكَthat المَخَازِيَاdisgraces
restore his modesty to Amr ibn al-As,
and clothe my honor, at that, in disgrace.
ولاand do not تَدَّعيclaim والصِّدْقُand truth قَوْلُكَyour word إنَّنيthat I
أَحَلْتُI altered وِدَادِيmy affection أوقَلَبْتُor I reversed ثَنَائِياmy praise
Do not claim—and your word is truthful—that I
have altered my affection or reversed my praise.
رَمَىmay He cast اللَّهُGod بالبُعْدِinto distance البعيدthe distant one مَوَدَّةًin affection
وأدْنَىand may He draw near امرأًa man ماso long as كانَhe remains للوُدِّto love دَانِيَاnear
May God cast far away whoever is distant in affection,
and draw a man close so long as he remains close in love.
دُعَاءٌa prayer علَىagainst نَفْسِيmyself لإبْرَارِto uphold مَقْسَمِيmy sworn oath
وأنْتَand you فتَنْجُوso you escape سَالِماًunharmed مِنْfrom دُعَائِياmy prayer
A prayer against myself, to uphold my sworn oath;
you, however, escape unharmed from my prayer.
وأَمْرَضُand most sickening شَيءٍthing للحَشَاto the heart وأَشَقُّهُand its most burdensome
علَىupon النَّفْسِthe soul إخفَائِيmy concealing علَىfrom النَّاسِthe people ماwhat بِيَاin me
And the thing most sickening to the heart, and hardest
upon the soul, is my hiding from people what ails me.
أُضَامُI am wronged فلاyet not أشْكُوI complain ولوand if هَمَّintended سَاعَةًa moment
لِسَانِيmy tongue بالشَّكْوَىto complain قَطعتُI would cut off لِسَانِيَاmy tongue
I am wronged, yet do not complain; if, even for a moment,
my tongue meant to complain, I would cut out my tongue.
فَطَلِّقْso divorce وَرَاجِعْand take back بعدَafter حِينٍa while مَودَّتِيmy affection
تَجدْهَاyou will find it علىdespite كثْرِfrequency of الطَّلاقِdivorce كَمَاjust as هِيَاit is
So divorce my affection, and take it back after a while;
despite repeated divorces, you will find it just as it was.
سَقَىmay He water اللَّهُGod بالجَرْعَاءِat al-Jar'a حَيّاًa tribe وإنَّنِيand indeed I
بِذَاكَthrough that قدindeed اسْتسقيتُهُI asked Him for rain لحيائِياfor my modesty's sake
May God send rain to a tribe at al-Jar'a; indeed,
by that prayer I have sought rain from Him for my modesty's sake.
هُمُthey أشْرعُونِيthey opened for me بَابَthe door كُلِّevery رَغِيبَةٍdesired blessing
وكَفُّواand they held back الأذَىharm عنfrom أَنْthat يَمُرَّit passes بِبَابِيَاby my door
They opened to me the door of every desired blessing,
and kept harm from passing by my door.
بِعَادُهُمُtheir remoteness قُرْبٌnearness وفَقْرُهُمُand their poverty غِنَىwealth
تُبَلُّis moistened يَدِيmy hand اليُمْنَىthe right بِهِwith it وشِمَالِيَاand my left hand
Their remoteness is nearness, and their poverty is wealth
that moistens my right hand and my left.
فَياso O ابنَson الأُلىthose who اجْتَابُواthey clothed themselves in الخَصَاصَةَpoverty والغِنَىwhile wealth
علَىupon جَارِهِمْtheir neighbor يَبْدوappears جَديداًnew وبَالِيَاand worn-out
So, O son of those who clothed themselves in poverty, while wealth
appears on their neighbor, both new and worn-out,
إذَاwhen سُدَّwas closed دُونَagainst الإذنِadmittance بابٌa door لِعِلَّةٍfor a reason
وكَانand was مُنَاداةُcalling الضُّيُوفِthe guests تَنَاجِيَاwhispering
when a door was barred against admittance for some reason,
and the calling of guests was done in whispers,
جَلَواthey displayed تِلكُمُthose الجِفنَthe bowls المِلاَءَbrimming وأعْلَنُواand they proclaimed

they displayed those brimming bowls and proclaimed
over them, with the callers' voices, a loud summons.
I seek protection for you أنlest أصْفُوI am clear وتكدرَand you turn turbid أوor أفِيI keep faith
وتَغدرَand you betray أوor أدْنُوI draw near وتُصْبِحَand you become نَائِياdistant
I seek protection for you, lest I be clear while you turn turbid, or keep faith
while you betray, or draw near while you become distant,
وأبْتَدِرُand I race toward الغَايَاتِthe goals سَبقاًto be first فأنتهيso I reach
لأبْعَدِهاto the farthest of them شَأْواًin the race ولَستَand you are not أَمَامِياahead of me
and race ahead toward the goals until I reach
the farthest of them in the race, with you not ahead of me.
