سَادَتيmy masters إنْif نَأتِgrew distant الدَّارُthe abode بِكُمْwith you
فَلَكُمْthen for you فيin سَاحَةِthe courtyard of القَلْبِthe heart مُقَامُa dwelling-place
My masters, if the abode has taken you far away,
My masters, if the house departs with you
Then you have a dwelling in the courtyard of my heart.
In the courtyard of my heart you have a dwelling
ماnot حَمَامُdoves الأيْكِthe grove لَمَّاwhen بنتُمُyou departed
عنfrom مَحَانِيthe recesses of الرَّبْعِthe dwelling لِيto me إلاَّexcept حِمَامُdeath
The grove's dove, since you departed
The cooing of the doves when you built
From the dwelling's recesses, is nothing but death to me.
Is to me nothing but cooing
كُلَّمَاwhenever رَجَّعَit trills فيin تَغريدِهِits singing
رَاجعتْنيreturn to me صَبَواتٌamorous yearnings وغَرَامُand passion
Whenever it trills in its song,
Whenever it repeats its song
Amorous yearnings and passion return to me.
Past passions come back to me
فَهوَso it مِثلِيlike me فيin مُعَاطَاةِpartaking of الجَوَىlove's anguish
فَكِلاَنَاso both of us حِلْفُa sworn companion of شَجْوٍsorrow مُسْتَهَامُlove-distraught
So it is like me in partaking of love's anguish;
It is like me in suffering from longing
For we are both sorrow's sworn companions, crazed with love.
So we both have sworn oaths of lament
غَيرَexcept أنِّيthat I لاdo not أرَىsee أجْفَانَهُits eyelids
أبَداًever تَنْدَىgrow moist ولِيwhile I have دَمْعٌtears سِجَامُstreaming
Yet I do not see its eyelids
Except I never see its eyelids
Ever grow moist, while my tears stream.
Damped, while I have ever-flowing tears
سَاهِراًwakeful لَمْdid not أدْرِI know ماwhat النَّومُsleep إذَاwhen
ضَمَّenfolded هَذَاthis النَّاسَpeople فيin اللَّيلِthe night المَنَامُslumber
Wakeful, I knew not what sleep was when
Sleepless, unaware of sleep when
Slumber enfolded these people in the night.
It embraces people in the night's slumber
فَسَلُواso ask عَنabout مُقْلَتِيmy eye طيفَكُمُyour dream-apparition
فَهوَfor it لاdoes not يطْرُقُvisit by night منone who لَيسَdoes not يَنَامُsleep
So ask your dream-apparition about my eye;
Ask about my sleepless eyes your specter
For it does not visit by night those who do not sleep.
It does not visit those who do not slumber
غَيْرُnot بِدْعٍa strange thing بَثِّيَmy confiding الشَّوقَlonging لَكُمْto you
فَإلَىfor to سَيِّدِهِhis master يَشْكُوcomplains الغُلامُthe servant
It is no strange thing that I confide my longing to you;
Save calling, my yearning for you I vent
For a servant complains to his master.
So the lad complains to his lord
وعَليكُمْand upon you مِنfrom كَئِيْبٍa sorrowful person مُدْنِفٍlovesick
طَلَّقَتْhave divorced أجْفَانُهُhis eyelids النَّومَsleep السَّلامُpeace
And upon you, from a sorrowful, lovesick man
And on you from a gloom-ridden, woeful one
Whose eyelids have divorced sleep, be peace.
Whose eyes have bid sleep goodbye, salams
