My lord, if a man were to knock at another man's door

With the hand of hope, and return with nothing,

You would pity him and blame the other for his stinginess.

And stinginess, you said, is human nature.

Yet you indeed possess the generosity to which one is drawn

By the kindness and beneficence so widely known.

And indeed I have stood at the door of your bounty, asking,

    In need, for some time.

I call upon you, imploring, and plead in humble supplication,

In private, sparing no effort, and in public.

So why do I return disappointed, after

My hand has wearied of knocking and my tongue has grown tired?
