    فما لِحَظِّي غدا بمنتبَذِ

    I have taken from you only what one takes;

why, then, has my share been cast aside?

I see no incantation that brings me nearer

to you, nor any binding charm among charms.

It suffices you that I see you drawing the

people, while I come to you without being drawn,

out of love—may I never come near you if

it is neither made proverbial nor singled out as exceptional.

Do not surrender me to Time, when already

you have rescued me from it—what a rescue!

If I am one of the burdensome, then bear the

burden; you will find me able to pierce the barrier.

Do not belittle me: sometimes there has been spent

    on demolishing Gog’s barrier a rat’s ingenuity.

Protect me, and I shall be like a sword purified by the

smith, which became one of the finest things fashioned:

perfectly even along the blade’s flat,

sharpened to the utmost along the edge.

Count me among the burdensome things around

you, and count my form among the amulets.

Rather, how many burdensome men have adopted traits

of yours, and become as light as arrow-feathers!

O house of Wahb, one sought refuge from your coldness

in your gentle embrace, yet was not granted refuge.

I am the one who made pilgrimage to you, while your Kaaba

had not been circumambulated, nor sought for refuge.

So let your coldness not cut my liver to pieces:

for love of you lies among those very pieces.
