بَاءَتْcame away حَنيفَةُHanifah بالخُسْرانِwith loss إذْwhen عَكَفَتْshe devoted herself
دُونَapart from الأَنَامِmankind منmade of الحَلْوىsweets علىto صَنَمِan idol
Hanifah suffered loss when she devoted herself,
alone among mankind, to an idol made of sweets.
لَوْif أنَّهُthat it منmade of بَرِشْتُوهBarishtuh (a sweet) وقدwhile already عَكَفَتْshe had devoted herself
علَيهِto it لاتَّبَعَتْهاwould have followed her سَائِرُall the other الأُمَمِnations
Had it been made of Barishtuh when she worshipped
it, all other nations would have followed her.
حَلْواءُa sweet لَوif جعلَتْhad made مثقالَهَاa mithqal of it دِيَةًblood money
بَكْرٌBakr لماwould not طَالبَتْهاhave demanded from her تَغْلبٌTaghlib بِدَمِfor blood
A sweet—had a mithqal of it been offered as blood money
by Bakr, Taghlib would not have demanded blood from her.
ولوand if تكرّمhad shown generosity منهاof it مَادِرٌMadir بِقِرَىby entertaining
ضيفٍa guest لماwould not وُصِفhave been described الطائيُّal-Ta'i بالكَرَمِas generous
And had Madir generously offered some of it to
a guest, al-Ta'i would not have been called generous.
ولَوand if تراءَتْit appeared عَلَىat بُعْدٍa distance لِذِيto one with شِبَعٍa full stomach
ألْفَيتهُyou would find him وهوwhile he يشْكُوcomplains of سَوْرةَthe fury of القرَمِravenous appetite
And were it to appear far off to someone already full,
you would find him complaining of a raging appetite.
ولَوand if أُتِيحَتْit were made available لأهْلِto the people of النَّارِthe Fire لاشْتَغَلُواthey would be absorbed
بأكلِهَاin eating it ماnot رَأَواthey would feel للنَّارِfrom the Fire منany أَلَمِpain
And were it granted to the people of the Fire, they would be so absorbed
in eating it that they would feel no pain from the Fire.
هَذَاthis ولَوْand if طَرَقَتْit visited by night فيin النَّومِsleep ذَاone possessed of سِنَةٍdrowsiness
مَاnot وَدَّhe would wish يَقظَتَهُhis awakening منfrom ذَلِكَthat الحُلُمِdream
All this—and were it to visit a dozing man in his sleep,
he would not wish to wake from that dream.
لَوif لَمnot أَذُقْهَاI had tasted it وأُلبِسهاand clothed it المدِيحَin praise لماwould not

Had I not tasted it and clothed it in praise, I would not
have found the creation of my tongue and mouth useful.
