ولَمَّاAnd when رأيتُI saw الكَاشِحِينَthe spiteful foes تتبَّعُواthey tracked
ولَمَّا رأيتُ الكَاشِحِينَ تتبَّعُوا
هَوَانَاour love وأَبدُواand they displayed دُوْنَناbefore us نَظَراًa look شَزْراhostile and sidelong
هَوَانَا وأَبدُوا دُوْنَنا نَظَراً شَزْرا
And when I saw the spiteful foes tracking
When I saw those conceited ones pursue
Our love, and casting hostile sidelong glances before us,
Disgrace for us and turn toward us with arrogant disdain,
جَعَلْتُI began وماthough not بيin me منany صُدُودٍaversion ولاnor قِلىًhatred
جَعَلْتُ وما بي من صُدُودٍ ولا قِلىً
أزورُكُمُI visit you يَوماًone day وأهجرُكُمْand I stay away from you شَهْراfor a month
أزورُكُمُ يَوماً وأهجرُكُمْ شَهْرا
I began—though I felt neither aversion nor hatred—
Though I have no shields or spears,
To visit you one day and stay away from you for a month.
I visit you one day and shun you for a month.
