وصَادِحَتَيand two singing birds وُرْقٍgray doves شَجَانِيmoved me to sorrow غِنَاهُمَاthe song of them both

And two singing gray doves—their song moved me to sorrow,
And drew my far-off yearning close to me.

فأبْرَزتَاهُso they both expressed it فيin ألَذِّthe sweetest سَمَاعِmusic
They exchange with us the plaint of love in song,
And so they voiced it in the sweetest music:
هَدِيرٌcooing كماas when حَرَّكْتَyou set vibrating أَوْتَارَthe strings مِزْهَرٍof a lute
ونَوْحٌand a lament كماas when اسْتَنْطَقتyou made speak جَونdark يَرَاعِa reed flute
A cooing, as though you had set a lute’s strings vibrating,
And a lament, as though you had made a dark reed flute speak.
