A greeting visits your air each morning and evening,

and the fragrance of praise wafts its scents toward you.

And may prayers raised aloft keep heading toward you,

their good wishes borne on the shoulder of northern lightning.

O our beloved ones—a man, ah, may sometimes call

upon a distant brother if his ways of escape grow narrow.

Will time bring me near you, and so cool

the blaze of longing whose scorching breath sears the heart,

and freeze the tears that, whenever summoned

by the promptings of love for you, pour down and ulcerate the eyelid?

It is grief enough that I am alone in Shiraz,

meeting at dawn and dusk what wastes my heart,

and alone with cares that, if they lodged on Yadhbul,

would make it shrink, its gravelly valleys rising above it.

And such longing—if a companion of darkness sought its radiance,

its kindling fire would suffice him without the light of lamps.

And an eye that shows me, in its eyelid's twitching,

such pain that its crushing weight drives patience away.

It has become the emblem of calamities, so that

through it, hidden and manifest affliction stand alike.

And things beyond the compass of verse, some of which

make their teller seek the shade of being excused.

I yearn, and find none but the caller of the morning,

who trades complaints of separation with me, and I with him.

He passes the hours of the day in lamentation,

until he sees the face of darkness shaking hands with him.

And even after stillness falls, he gives a wail,

and another—the saddest lament is one whose mourner will not cease.

Grief and separation bewailed my solitude, and sobs broke forth

for him from his gray doves, at what his body harbored.

When he shakes his wing and it fails him, he nearly has

his ribs cut through by the trilling of longing.

Except that he has companions: whenever he calls,

his singing fellows answer him from nearby.

But I, whenever I long for you, find between you

and me the wilderness's hollows and barren flats,

and a sea of clashing waves, never toyed with

by the wind's hand without its swell mounting the stars.

Yet even in prison his life is more comfortable,

and one near his kin and one far from them are not alike.

Distance launches against me the raids of its tyranny,

and its clamoring voices call to me from every quarter.

Victory is its own; let it turn back the reins, showing mercy

to me, for I have no troops to fight it.

Nor does the solitary captive brandish his spears

to thrust, or unsheathe his sword blades to strike.

May rain drench Jidd Hafs in torrents; were tears to rise

to it, their trickle would spare it any need for rain.

And may the fluttering breeze never cease, when it moves by night,

to visit its air gently at evening and at dawn.

A land where the heart has settled and remains,

though the body's soaring impulses have carried it away from there.

Will God keep faith with me by granting a return

to it, showing me the frown of tears turned cheerful,

and will this distance's stubbornness be tamed,

its bolting spirit yielding in perfect docility?
