You are like the beautiful flower in the forest,

    But amid thorns and worms.

And fragrant flowers consider the wicked thorns

And the worms to be kinds of roses.

So understand people: people are but creatures

Spreading corruption in the world, without sound judgment.

And happy, truly happy, is whoever lives like the night,

A stranger among the people of this world.

And let them live in the darkness of sin,

And live in your praiseworthy purity,

Like the innocent angel, like the white rose,

Like the waves in the distant ocean,

Like the songs of birds, like the enchanting twilight,

    Like the distant, happy star,

Like the snows of the mountains, flooded with light,

And rising above the dust of the earth.

You are, beneath the sky, a beautiful soul,

Which God fashioned from the fragrance of roses.

And the sons of earth are like monkeys—how wasted

Is the fragrance of roses among monkeys!

You are the work of God's brush, so do not cast

Heaven's art to the ignorance of slaves.

You were not created for people to approach you,

But to be worshipped from afar.
