    Yesterday my life was

    like the smiling sky.

And today it has become like the depths

    of brooding caves.

    I had, among

    my beautiful dreams, a brook,

through which the water of love flowed,

    pure, rippling along.

    Its waves coursed along,

smiling like the dreams of youth,

    white, radiant, laughing,

like the flowers of the hills,

swaying like the brides of Paradise

    among its fields,

    chanting hymns of wishes

    in its surge and return.

It is the brook of love that

    was in my dewy heart,

flowing freely along the lips of dreams,

    moving at an unhurried pace,

    reciting to my hearing

    the songs of pure life,

    and stirring in my heart

    the enchanting hymns of eternity.

    The immortal maidens stand,

    the brides of wondrous poetry,

    upon its two banks, repeating

the melody of the gentle dream.

They touch, on the lyre of dreams,

    the strings of love song,

    so melodies of longing overflow,

    sweet as hope.

And, bearing smiles and melodies, fly

    the wings of echo

    within that beautiful horizon

    and that gentle breeze.

And there, where an embrace joins

smiles and the melodies of love,

    the beautiful dream sways

like a breeze from the drunken heart.

It is a brook; made to gush forth

was its spring within my heart

by the eyelids of a beauty revealed to me

    by life, to my misery.

The eyelids of a beauty who appeared

to me at the dawn of youth,

like a bride among poetry's beauties

in the twilight glow of clouds.

Then she vanished behind the sky,

    beyond those clouds,

    where the immortal maidens

    sway among the stars.

    Then she vanished—alas!—

flying on the wings of death

toward the sky; and here am I,

on earth, a statue of sorrows.

    All this was yesterday,

    in the distant yesterday.

And yesterday was swept away, vanquished,

by the hand of ever-ready death.

All this was beneath the shade

of yesterday and the beautiful past.

All this was in the radiance

of the full moon before its setting.

And today, since gone are the shadows

of yesterday from my wondrous bloom,

and the lovely bloom has cloaked itself

in the darkness of the dreadful night,

its lips have withered, and it has become

    withered, worn thin by wounds.

And it fell, for the night made it hear

    the hymns of brooding silence.

    Yesterday my life was

    like the smiling sky.

    And today it has become

like the depths of brooding caves.

    For the whole spring now

flows through the valley of pain,

    stumbling among the rocks,

    sinking into that darkness.

Within it have dried up the waves

    of that fading passion,

so tears have poured into it

    in their cascading downpour.

It has been veiled by the clouds

    of existence's gloomy sorrows.

It has been struck mute by the bitterness

    of the unhappy heart—so cruel.

    Frozen upon its lips are

the melodies of longing and love.

And the songs of love have perished

in its depths when it fell.

And the waves sped along it,

    with frozen features, gloomy.

They have been silenced by the anguish

    of the sorrowful, brooding soul.

Their wishes have ebbed, and sunk

    within them has enchanting beauty.

So, in longing for it, they were seized

    by faithless despondency.

Upon its two banks, the brides

of poetry hold a mourning assembly.

There they pour out tears until

    blood strikes the tears.

    Then that tear-stream flows,

    bloodied, to the brook's heart,

    where bitterness and grief lie

    among the withered flowers.

And they wail until filled are

the horizons by the sound of sobbing.

Then the echoes of lamentation travel

    toward the layers of fog.

    And there, amid the fog,

    darkest, still, and desolate,

    my pains tremble, and quivering

    with sobs is despondency.
